This book is a necessity for anyone in the African diaspora looking to connect to the culture. The author does a wonderful job of providing practical ways to engage in wellness practices and connects them to a wider context, including their meaning/ origin in African cultures. She provides a refreshing take on decolonizing your mind and wellness practices. Some other books focus too much on ancient Egypt or get too woo-woo and deep in pseudo-science. This book highlights how many practices that you may be already familiar with are deeply connected with African culture. However, they may have been popularized by the far east, India, and other places known for their wellness exports.

She spends some time providing context on how we became so disconnected from our roots and why finding information on African-centered wellness practices is challenging and sometimes not accepted by others. She also acknowledges diversity among the diaspora and how not every practice or experience will resonate with everyone. Followed by a brief introduction to pan-africanism and practical information on how to incorporate more wellness practices that are deeply rooted in African culture into your life.

I greatly appreciated how she juxtaposed Western philosophers such as Nietzsche, Kant, etc, with African communalism and other African schools of thought. The author tackles complex subjects with an evolved maturity without getting too academic and into the weeds. It's an accessible book for readers of all levels.

A must read in my opinion!
