Exploring a wide range of everyday topics - from credit card debt and household budgeting to holiday sales - Ariely and Kreisler demonstrate how our ideas about dollars and cents are often wrong and cost us more than we know. Mixing case studies and anecdotes with tangible advice and lessons, they cut through the unconscious fears and desires driving our worst financial instincts and teach us how to improve our money habits.

Narration did not add value
Revisado: 04-08-24
Nothing here revolutioned my thinking, even if the information is generally welcomed. Two annoyances really caused me to lose focus and the point. Firstly is the inflated Jeeves style narration. Second is the cheeky humor. Overall a demonstration of shallow discussion peppered with cliche remarks.

Historia
Ever noticed that trying to calm down often produces more agitation? Or that real fulfillment can be elusive, despite living a successful life? Often, such difficulties stem from the human brain's hardwired tendency to seek pleasure and avoid pain. Modern science demonstrates that this survival mechanism served the needs of our earliest ancestors, but is at the root of many problems that we face today, such as depression, compulsive and addictive behaviors, chronic pain, and stress and anxiety.

Boring lecturer will test your mindfulness
Revisado: 02-10-20
If you can actually stand listening to this lecturer for more than a few minutes, then you are probably mindful enough already. But most likely you will tune out long before he says anything of value. Mindfulness seems an interesting topic; deserves an interesting lecturer.

Historia
While researching the toxic and addictive properties of sugar for Fat Chance, Robert Lustig made an alarming discovery - our pursuit of happiness is being subverted by a culture of addiction and depression from which we may never recover. Dopamine is the "reward" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we want more; yet every substance or behavior that releases dopamine in the extreme leads to addiction. Serotonin is the "contentment" neurotransmitter that tells our brains we don't need any more; yet its deficiency leads to depression.

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Way better than expected, learned a lot.
Revisado: 09-13-18
As mentioned by others, it takes a couple chapters to accept the mode of narration. Then it gets good, detailing the specifics of latest sleep research. It does get repetitious, be warned, this guy really really wants everyone to get enough sleep! Still totally worth a full listen.

A major audiobook about the future of the world, blending intellectual and natural history and field reporting into a powerful account of the mass extinction unfolding before our eyes. Over the last half a billion years, there have been five mass extinctions, when the diversity of life on Earth suddenly and dramatically contracted. Scientists around the world are currently monitoring the sixth extinction, predicted to be the most devastating extinction event since the asteroid impact that wiped out the dinosaurs.

No surprises, a few interesting bits
Revisado: 02-19-18
A very general recap of extinction events across geological time, along with numerous anecdotes about specific species extinction. Interesting in that "hmm okay, now I know" kinda way, as opposed to the "whoah that's amazing!" kinda way. I honestly felt the narrater missed the style of writing, choosing an overly passive tone and completely flattening parts that were written clearly as upbeat humor.
