Historia
There is no question that the United States faces dangerous threats from without; the greatest peril to the country, however, comes from within. In The Bill of Obligations, bestselling author Richard Haass argues that, to solve our climate of division and safeguard our democracy, the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded. The Bill of Rights is at the center of our Constitution, yet the most intractable conflicts often emerge from cases that, as former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer pointed out, “are not about right versus wrong. They are about right versus right.”

Historia
For all the attempts to understand the state of American politics and the blue/red divide, we've ignored what economic and cultural loss can do to pride. What happens, Arlie Russell Hochschild asks, when a proud people in a hard-hit region suffer the deep loss of pride and are confronted with a powerful political appeal that makes it feel "stolen"? Hochschild's research drew her to Pikeville, Kentucky, in the heart of Appalachia, within the whitest and second-poorest congressional district in the nation.

Historia
The neighborhood of Oleander Court is the poster child for suburban bliss. The residents compare lawns beautified by hired help. They monitor home values. They toss perfect furniture because they wanted tapioca, not beige. But when a string of murders rips through the neighborhood, suspicions abound as new secrets come to light. And as more and more bodies are taken away, it becomes clear that the killer is strategically selecting each and every victim, picking off the shallowest, most wasteful of the lot in spectacular fashion and leaving everyone in the neighborhood to wonder Who’s next?

Historia
Why do Democrats fail to win voters to their side, and what can they do to develop new winning political strategies—especially as the very fate of democracy hangs in the balance in 2024? Too often the carefully constructed, rational arguments of the Left meet a grisly fate at the polls, where voters are instead swayed by Republican candidates hawking anger, fear, and resentment. Only when Democrats are handed an overwhelming motivational issue—like the Supreme Court’s 2022 Dobbs decision overturning Roe v. Wade—have they found a way to counter this effect.

An absolutely important read for democrat leaners who lament why they consistently fall short despite routinely leading polls on issues. Blunt and to the point.

Historia
Forged during the tumultuous but triumphant postwar years when America came of age as a world power, The Irony of American History is more relevant now than ever before. Cited by politicians as diverse as Hillary Clinton and John McCain, Niebuhr's masterpiece on the incongruity between personal ideals and political reality is both an indictment of American moral complacency and a warning against the arrogance of virtue.

As powerful today….
Revisado: 05-10-24
Intro was written in praise of Niebuhr’s foresight with regards to prideful invasion of Iraq. Read another twenty years later I can see the admonisions ring true about our domestic acceptance of a final solution between either maga or Sanders style progressiveism, both of which offer unrealistic solutiions devoid of humility. History repeats and repeats. Powerful stuff. Did not like the reader so much though. Made it sound way too elitist.

Spade is cool…
Revisado: 08-16-23
Was a little underwhelmed given what I read about it from critics. Can see why it rose above the typical hardboiled dime novel of the time. Spade is an awesome character. Plot is a little lacking though IMO. Maybe I am just dating myself. Performance tad over the top for my taste.

Historia
Following its initial appearance in serial form, Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage was published as a complete work in 1895 and quickly became the benchmark for modern antiwar literature. In the character of Henry Flemming, Stephen Crane provides a great and realistic study of the mind of an inexperienced soldier trapped in the fury and turmoil of war. Flemming dashes into battle, at first tormented by fear, then bolstered with courage in time for the final confrontation.

The Stressed Mind
Revisado: 08-16-23
Wonderfully turbulent adventure into one young man’s mind during conflict. What it lacks for physical specifics (read somewhere that Chancellorsville is actual battle), more than makes for in what the mind must be like in battle.
