Racing Pace of a Story!
Revisado: 06-14-24
Loved the story…nothing fanciful…very current. The main characters were strong and well developed. I was well able to feel like I was there—the way they described the story’s backdrop.

"Split Second" Action
Revisado: 06-05-21
This was a fast-paced story. Loved it! A few little twists and turns that were unexpected. I kept wondering until the last 5 chapters as to the full motive behind everything. I thoroughly enjoyed the story. Mr. B did not disappoint.

Intriguing...
Revisado: 06-05-21
Much as I love Mary-Louise Parker as an actress, I wasn't sure about her narrating this story for the first 30 minutes. She does have a unique cadence to her speech. Her style was initially a quirky, halting, jarring sound to me. Yet, I pressed on because the story was unusual and I was intrigued as to where or what direction the story would go. The way this story played out, I began to get comfortable with the sound of Ms. Parker's voice and style for this project. The length of the story was just enough. The way it ended, I'm not sure if you could have wrung any more out of it. IMO, as a "freebie", the story overall was just OK.

Historia
In a collection of original essays, the venerated television journalist, Dan Rather, celebrates our shared values and what matters most in our great country, and shows us what patriotism looks like. Writing about the institutions that sustain us, such as public libraries, public schools, and national parks; the values that have transformed us, such as the struggle for civil rights; and the drive toward science and innovation that has made the US great, Rather brings his experience on the frontlines of the world's biggest stories, and offers listeners a way forward.

A Book of Great Steadiness
Revisado: 05-07-21
I have always admired Dan Rather. His voice has been truly a steadying commentary on the truthfulness and untruthfulness of the world as it was happening during his career, and as it is happening now. This book sugar coated nothing. I am not normally a non-fiction reader...I was curious as to what he would say...and I hung onto every word of this book. I felt all of the emotion and empathy he conveyed on the disparity of people who were nonwhite, and his confession of how fortunate his life turned out. There was no pandering to those of us who are underrepresented in the actual "fabric" of America. What Mr. Rather has written is a deep view of actually what has been going on in the country and a hopeful view of our fragile democracy holding it together. He didn't put you into a trance with his history points of context. No, these facts were to the point and very relatable. Yet, always, optimism and his mantra of "steady" gives me hope. I would recommend this book to anyone. This is a favorite in my personal library and I do believe I will be listening to it again.

Meh...
Revisado: 08-24-20
I was almost half-way into this book, and it just didn't grab me. I understood the characters, but I really didn't like them--not enough to care about what, or what I surmised would happen, to them. I very rarely do this, but I skipped to the last chapter and all was revealed as I thought it would. There was too much psychological talking/explanations for their actions within either of the main characters to hold my interest.

Historia
The Earl of Wrexford possesses a brilliant scientific mind, but boredom and pride lead him to reckless behavior. He does not suffer fools gladly. So when pompous, pious Reverend Josiah Holworthy publicly condemns him for debauchery, Wrexford unsheathes his rapier-sharp wit and strikes back. As their war of words escalates, London's most popular satirical cartoonist, A. J. Quill, skewers them both.

Murder + Emerging Science in England...Cool!
Revisado: 07-09-20
I was drawn in by the characters from the very beginning. The story/mystery and the way the story developed wasn't developed in any obvious or usual formulaic way. I can't wait to read the next book (there had better be one).

A Cozy English Mystery (just how I wanted it!)
Revisado: 05-03-20
I thought the Narrator was great! The characters had depth yet all displayed that bit of mystery about them...where you thought "so & so"is this or that....or he or she could have...then the doubts crept in dispelling my initial theory. The location and background descriptions made me feel if I was there. Towards the last 90 minutes of the story, I did guess who had done it and I was right! Although, nice little shocking surprise at the end!

Good, yet uneven with story pacing...
Revisado: 03-31-20
I didn’t care for Ms. Pressley’s narration—didn’t like her tone. It sounded ultra harsh to me. I did enjoy Mr. Brewer’s narration —very smooth. The story...well, by the 4th or 5th chapter, I was almost ready to give up on it. It got better, then it didn’t...and so on. It wasn’t a “bumpy ride”, but a muddled one, in my opinion. The conclusion: kinda meh...

Revisado: 03-23-20
James Taylor...WOW! Hearing his backstory really blew me away...like the album, Sweet Baby James!! (I literally WORE that album OUT!) I never knew about his life... I am humbled. I SO enjoyed hearing the honesty and frankness of both his family’s life, all their flaws and his shortcomings—It takes great strength to reveal that to the world. Mr. Taylor, thank you.
