Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

Do not listen to or read this book unless you are still under 50. But, if you want to know how much better it would be to get old in India, go ahead. Or if you want to know that many doctors don’t like old people because we never get well, this is for you. It might get better later on, but I couldn’t get past the first few chapters.

Historia
For all its old-fashioned charm, Forbes Abbot is far from the close-knit community that ex-Londoners Mallory and Kate Lawson expected. In this village, everyday squabbles can quickly turn to murder. As the couple begins to settle into their new life away from the big city, it isn't long until they're thrown into the horror and mayhem of a true Midsomer Murders mystery. Detective Chief Inspector Barnaby has encountered many intriguing cases in his years on the force, but soon he will discover that the incident of the ghost in the machine is the most challenging of them all.

Absolute the most boring thing I have ever tried to listen to
Revisado: 04-06-24
I should have known when I saw it was 17 hours long. After the first 3 hours of endlessly monotonous background and descriptions, I had to skip ahead. I tried several chapters but nothing interesting showed up. I finally skipped to the third to last chapter, when something interesting finally arose. The last two chapters, not counting the Afterward (over an hour in itself) were over an hour each and contained everything I cared to know about the people and events. The Afterward’s ending is just stupid.

I need more superlatives!
Revisado: 10-23-23
I kind of stopped writing reviews for the Chet and Bernie series because I had used up all my “really greats” and “wonderfuls” and “I love thems.” But I was so happy when this one arrived I think I have to say something. I just can’t get enough of Chet and Bernie, and have listened to some of them more than once. Please please please keep them coming, and please keep having Mr. Frangione narrate them! He gets the voices so perfectly, especially Chet’s!

Historia
Young Tom French was found dead, lying in a marsh on the Norfolk coast, with his head bashed in and his binoculars still around his neck. One of the best birders in England, Tom had put the village of Rushy on the birdwatching map. Everyone liked him. Or did they? George Palmer-Jones, an elderly birdwatcher who decided quietly to look into the brutal crime, discovered mixed feelings aplenty. Still, he remained baffled by a deed that could have been motivated by thwarted love, pure envy, or something else altogether.

Too much twitching, but otherwise intriguing
Revisado: 09-26-23
The narration was just right. It sounded exactly the way I imagined George would talk and think. I found all the descriptions of and dialogue about the twitchers to be somewhat tedious, but in the end, I realized it was necessary to establish the near-manic, obsessive nature of the activity. I, too, will start Book 2.

Historia
DS George Cross has always wondered why his mother left him when he was a child. Now she is back in his life, he suddenly has answers. But this unexpected reunion is not anything he's used to dealing with. When a disturbing case lands on his desk, he is almost thankful for the return to normality. The body of a monk is found savagely beaten to death in a woodland near Bristol. Nothing is known about Brother Dominic's past, which makes investigating difficult. How can Cross unpick a crime when they don't know anything about the victim? And why would someone want to harm a monk?

I think the narration is pretty authentic, and have enjoyed the story twice, so far
Revisado: 07-16-23
I’m not British, so I can’t say for sure how a politician would pronounce definite and indefinite articles, or how they should be pronounced in British English. But in any event, I think the narrator is supposed to pronounce them the way the character would, if the words are dialogue, or the way the character would think them, or tell them, in the case of an omniscient narrator. Just my opinion, and the reason I feel happy giving the narrator’s performance five stars. I also appreciate that the narrator speaks very precisely and deliberately; in my imagination, that’s the way DS Cross would think and speak.

Historia
Late on midsummer's night there is a splash in the river Thames. A body is found on an island, asphyxiated and laced with strange markings. For DCI Craig Gillard it's a baffling case. The victim's identity is elusive, clues are scarce and every witness has something to hide. Meanwhile one of Britain's deadliest serial killers is finally up for parole after a deal to reveal the location of two missing bodies. The felon has his own plans to get even with witnesses, accusers and the officer who caught him 30 years before. And who was that? A young trainee by the name of Gillard.

I’m glad I decided to continue
Revisado: 07-01-23
I almost decided not to continue listening, because early on, it appeared this would be another “revenge against the protagonist” novel. But it’s far from that! I don’t think anyone will be disappointed in the plot, and I applaud the improvement in the narrator’s delivery. .

Historia
A young detective is out for a jog on a snowy winter morning. Then she sees something terrible: a murder in the park, sudden and inexplicable. A woman has been killed by a passing hooded cyclist. It’s just DCI Craig Gillard’s luck that he’s on duty. The body is that of Tanvi Roy, one of the richest women in Britain and matriarch of a food empire. With a tangled web of family and business contacts and jealousies, Gillard’s job just got even more complex. As he delves deeper into the Roy family, it’s clear that everything is not as it seems.

Really liked the story
Revisado: 06-20-23
Altogether very satisfying, and definitely worth a credit and the time. I just wish the narrator’s voice didn’t become so unpleasant when he was reading the dialogue of the main characters. It seems very nasal and whining. Perhaps that’s an authentic accent for the characters in that location. Also, I hesitate to say it, but the story did seem to drag on a bit, although it’s not actually longer than some previous entries in the series.

Touching and searing at the same time
Revisado: 01-26-23
This story isn’t like a Chet and Bernie story. It’s pretty gritty. But the protagonist’s toughness helps the reader through the difficult parts. The plot seemed quite original to me. Every time I thought it was about to degenerate into stereotype, it took a more interesting and realistic turn. I would definitely like to read/listen to more stories about these characters.

Historia
For decades, biology has been dominated by the study of genetic information. Information is important, but it is only part of what makes us alive. Our inheritance also includes our living metabolic network, a flame passed from generation to generation, right back to the origin of life. In Transformer, biochemist Nick Lane reveals a scientific renaissance that is hiding in plain sight-how the same simple chemistry gives rise to life and causes our demise.

Completely transformed my sense of being alive
Revisado: 12-08-22
I could only vaguely sense how the complicated biochemistry described by the author leads to glimpses into the possible chemical origins of life and all its complexity. [And by the way, he doesn’t dumb it down much for non-scientist readers (listeners) like me.] But I can no longer have quite the cavalier attitude to what I eat and do as I did before this book. The author’s descriptions of the transformations that must occur at the molecular level in our cells, that cause growth or death, have given me a new sense of astonishment about life itself. At the end, the author describes the transformations that he speculates might give rise to consciousness. I found it electrifying to learn and think about it all. And anyone who reads or listens to the book will appreciate the extra meaning in that description.
