I'm an Ann Patchett fan, with a couple of exceptions. Tom Lake was not one of those exceptions. It was beautifully written and performed. This is a story of the enchantment of new love and the deep contentment of old love. It is also a story of the excitement of fame and the fulfillment of a quiet life. The characters are richly drawn and believable, never caricatures. The narrator is spectacular, breathing an extra dimension into every page of the story.

West with Giraffes has it all - likeable and unusual characters, unexpected story and history, a view of life's various ages, changes in our 20th century world, and insights that make us reflect on our own lives. It kept my interest and sometimes had me on the edge of my seat, nervous about what would happen to the characters next. I recommend it.

The Seamstress of Sardinia is a nice light read with historical content of Italian working women in the early to mid 20th century. I wouldn't call it a must-read but I enjoyed it and learned a bit.

Do yourself a favor and read or listen to this novel. Narrators, plot, characters, love story, history - all get 5 stars from me. There's even some lust. More important is that this historical fiction is about how the US invaded Mexico in the mid-1800s and walked away with about half of the Mexican territory. It provided a piece of US history that I'd never even thought about, despite having lived in Texas several years. Now I'm interested in learning more.

The wrong families for sure, without even one redeeming member. This is a book about the mental instability that permeates families, friends, and casual relationships - and how those unstable minds destroy other lives they may touch. I'm left wondering if and how Sam would recover from his genetic inheritance.

Narrator and author do a good job distinguishing each character, with different personality traits rather than silly accents.

The content of The Butterfly Garden is so disturbing that I almost put it down early in the book. I often felt like a voyeur but kept reading because it was so well written and interesting. It is the psychological concept and the protagonist Maya that kept me listening. Despite that, I think that some will find it too sexual and violent.

The Butterfly Garden audiobook is thought provoking, has an interesting storyline and excellent narrators. I'll look for other books by Dot Hutchison, hopefully not as disturbing

This novel's plot is involving and surprising, with an outstanding protagonist and mysterious story line. Excellent narrative cast, especially protagonist Shadow. The number of characters, some with similar accents, sometimes made it confusing and difficult to distinguish between the good guys and the bad guys. That may have been intentional, since one point of the book was that good and bad guys are often interchangeable.

This book requires the reader's serious attention, because of the number of characters and the complexity of the concepts. I didn't want it to end.

Narrator and author present an interesting, if somewhat speculative and light historical fiction. The book is long enough to provide a meaty story, but short enough to keep our interest throughout.

The fantasy's characters are cute and lighthearted. The plot is so-so. The narrators are excellent. All in all, it's an short, easy love story with a fantastical twist.

Another Andy Weir SciFi Funfest

I can't get enough of Andy Weir's scifi. It's fun, thought-provoking, and totally entertaining. "Hail Mary's" writing and plot are engaging, brought alive by narrator Ray Porter.

"Hail Mary," protagonist, Grace, is humorous, likeable, and oh so smart. He's just what Earth needs for an interstellar mission to save itself from a micro-enemy. Rocky, Grace's Eridian equivalent, has similar attributes, which it needs to save its own world.

Grace and Rocky make compatible teammates as they learn to understand each other's language and survival needs and skills. The whole book is a strong argument for the importance of teamwork.

Their humor is mixed with drama, science, enough thrills for an amusement park. And the ending is something of a surprise.

All in all, "Hail Mary" is a fine romp through our part of the Milky Way.
