Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Found the music distracting
Revisado: 01-09-25
I wish they’d just let Dinklage or Patel just read the book. The production features made it hard to distinguish the dialogue.

Historia
Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a bucolic Irish village would be the perfect escape. After 25 years in the Chicago police force and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens. But when a local kid whose brother has gone missing arm-twists him into investigating, Cal uncovers layers of darkness beneath his picturesque retreat, and starts to realize that even small towns shelter dangerous secrets.

Empathy and a complex moral viewpoint
Revisado: 09-23-24
Some reviewers founded this book boring, and it did take me a while to become absorbed by its story. At first I was drawn to Cak’s engaged observation of the natural world-especially his growing attachment to the rooks outside his house. Later, his hesitant, growing attachment to Lanie (sp?) and Trey, and his ambivalent relationship with Mark (Mart?) that became compelling. I began to think this her best book thus far.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

Wrong reader for great book
Revisado: 06-06-24
Fascinating detail and analysis, but this otherwise capable British reader was wrong for this American author.

Historia
Rife with the indulgent pleasures of life among New York’s one-percenters, Pineapple Street is a smart, escapist novel that sparkles with wit. Full of recognizable, loveable—if fallible—characters, it’s about the peculiar unknowability of someone else’s family, the miles between the haves and have-nots, and the insanity of first love—all wrapped in a story that is a sheer delight.

Overall, I found this well meaning, but not either particularly witty or insightful. But it was a pleasant read.

An author noted that it’s just as hard to write a bad book as it is to write a good one. Bryndza has indeed written very good ones in the past.

Very good, but not his best
Revisado: 12-15-22
What I really want to say, I think at the close of every audiobook. Why do they ruin your rnding with ads. I like to be left to think about the book. The commercial verbiage destroys any chance of that.

Female reader wrong for me
Revisado: 07-23-22
I might have liked this book much more with another reader. I was never able to let her breathless melodrama and exaggerated, little girl faux femininity recede from my consciousness. But it’s a matter of taste, and others may find her narration compelling.

Chrissie is eight and she has a secret: she has just killed a boy. The feeling made her belly fizz like soda pop. Her playmates are tearful and their mothers are terrified, keeping them locked indoors. But Chrissie rules the roost - she's the best at wall-walking, she knows how to get free candy, and now she has a feeling of power that she never gets at home, where food is scarce and attention scarcer.

Heartbreaking, but deeply perceptive
Revisado: 11-12-21
I don’t think Jewel is quite up to Faulkner, but the childhood anguish of the protagonist made this the hardest book to get through since AS I Lay Dying. The stunningly insightful description of a child’s inner life makes the painfulness worthwhile. I so hope the insights arose from the author’s psychological discernment and not from personal experience. The experiences were too, too harrowing.
