A great story few no about!
Revisado: 01-24-19
I went into this with no idea of who Everett Ruess was, but by the time I finished I felt like a kindred spirit. Over the course of thirty years I have been going into the wilderness of southern Utah to discover the Anasazi ruins and beautiful canyons and have written my own novel "Anasazi Dreams" about the area. There are so many parallels to our stories that I found it spooky. In his short life Everett did so much as an artist and outdoorsman. The book gives details of his family. what may have become of him. Yet, it is his own writings that touch the soul. A great book.

An awesome murder mystery
Revisado: 10-09-18
Listening to the audio book had me fascinated with the story and wondering where it was going to take me. I never quite knew in advance who the killer was going to be and liked the conclusion. There were a few places I thought the story dragged a bit with too much detail among the detectives, but over all, a well written book. Not so great was the narrator - she did okay, but at times it seemed like there was an echo to the recording which I found distracting, but not enough to not enjoy the tale.

Fast moving historical mystery romance
Revisado: 10-09-18
This was a excellent and fast moving tale that reminds one of Charles Dickens many stories with lots of colorful characters and vivid details of 1820's London. The book revolves around a young lady who in the process of helping one of her foster sisters comes into contact with a young boy named Eel (who knows the streets well) and a man of mystery whom she finds herself falling for, despite herself. There are robberies and secret societies that connect everything and everyone in the story to our heroine. The narrator was talented and kept me listening, not wanting to pause the story at any time. Great book from a first time author. Can't wait to see what Z. Minor is working on next.

Historia
Call Me by Your Name first swept across the world in 2007. It is the story of a sudden and powerful romance that blossoms between an adolescent boy and a summer guest at his parents' cliffside mansion on the Italian Riviera. During the restless summer weeks, unrelenting but buried currents of obsession, fascination, and desire intensify their passion as they test the charged ground between them and verge toward the one thing both already fear they may never truly find again: total intimacy.

A book that touches the soul
Revisado: 07-03-18
I actually listened to the audio book first, waiting to see the movie. I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. It really was little more than the thoughts of a young boy when he falls for an older man, yet it tugged at the heart as you his felt his yearning and confusion. Armie Hammer did a great job narrating the book (which actually has him playing the opposite character of the one he portrayed in the film). Upon seeing the movie I was touched at how beautifully it followed the book, although they did leave out the character of the sick neighbor girl (but I realized she wasn't essential to the main theme) and the party at the book store (which I felt was awesome) was deleted from the film. I'm not sure which I enjoyed better - the book or the film - but it really doesn't matter because they were both beautifully done.

A New look at an Old Star
Revisado: 07-03-18
I had seen many of Dana Andrews films and always thought him a capable actor, but only a few films really stood out for me of his, so I was totally surprised to become interested in his personal story as a preacher's son and family man. He truly was a complex fellow and it was nice to learn he'd beat alcoholism in his later years. Although his story didn't have a happy ending with him living happily ever after, it did make him more human.

Another side of the coin
Revisado: 07-03-18
Having listened to all of Debbie Reynold's audio books and then Carrie Fishers and Eddie Fishers, it was fun to get a completely different point of view on much of what had been written by others. Joely does a great job of telling her story and also letting the reader know what became of her own mother, Connie Fisher (heartbreaking to learn she'd also had a stroke around the same time as Debbie Reynolds). This is a story of a famous, but very flawed family, that allows the reader to know it isn't always greener on the other side and that celebrities are just like the rest of us - damaged, loved, forgiven their flaws.

Truly Happy Days
Revisado: 07-03-18
I learned so much more about Marion Ross by listening to her tell her own story. This is one that is at the top of my list. It wasn't boring to hear about her life growing up poor or how she broke into films and TV (I was shocked to learn she had bit parts in so many classics I'd seen). I grew up watching her as the perfect mom on "Happy Days" and found it refreshing to know she wasn't far from that character, despite what she says. She comes across as a warm, caring person and I think that is why so many people love her. It was also inspiring and fun to hear her former castmates tell their views of her and the show towards the end. Made for an All-Star book to enjoy over and over again. One of the best.

Davy Jones does a wonderful job of telling his story and how he came to be one of the Monkeys, but he doesn't give us much about his castmates or the rest of his life. This is a fast moving book and leaves out a lot of details, yet is enjoyable because he is obviously a man who has enjoyed all the ups and downs of his life.

More than Interesting
Revisado: 07-03-18
David Spade does a wonderful job of narrating his own story, but I was still a little disappointed when he gave so much detail to things like having sex for the first time and how he was never sure how long he'd last on Saturday Night Live, but gives us nothing on his hit TV shows, especially "Just Shoot Me" and the cast. Also doesn't go into any detail over his movies either. I would have preferred the full story, but still enjoyed what info he was willing to give. He is a very funny guy.
