Historia
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

Intriguing but at times Harry Potter-ish
Revisado: 11-26-24
I liked the book and how it told the history of words, the idea of magic unto the words and how the author tied it all together. The story was great but it lacked the beauty that words can also hold, the poetic flavor. It was very analytical and scientific. I felt it would have given the story and characters more dimension if the analytic portion could be told with a sense of discovery for the reader than being straight out told. I would have prefered the story to unfold the information and not make it like a lecture. It sometimes made it boring. I totally recommend the book though. It's a fantastic story. ~T

Historia
Passionate, earthy, deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable contribution to modern fiction: a vibrant new perspective of female life in the age that shaped present day civilization and values.
If you like The Red Tent, try The Harlot by the Side of the Road, a recounting of some of the most startling and explicit writings from The Old Testament.

A heart wrenching story of Love, loss, and renewal
Revisado: 03-04-19
I read this book many years ago, when my children were toddlers. I absolutely loved it and passed it on to my Egyptian friend. She passed it on to the women in her family because she also loved it. Now that my kids are teens, it's fabulous and we listened to it for a few months before heading to Israel, where we saw Rachel's grave. My girls loved listening to this story! I only wished there were a young adult version where a little bit of the newlyweds' experiences were abridged. I just forward through it, and continued on with them. It's nothing they don't know about already. It's all described in good taste. It was just a little weird with me (their mom) in the car. The reader was fantastic and we all enjoyed the story.

A great listen while in the car.

When I'm by myself in the car, I'm listening to this book. It's a wonderful memoir of her life and experiences that she turns to lessons and learns from in her life. I'm glad she's sharing it.

Great with kids in the car
Revisado: 03-04-19
My teens and I are enjoying this audio book. I read it years ago and I'm enjoying listening to it with my kids. They listen and enjoy it plus we get to make predictions as we pause when something major is about to happen. It also helps with the problem of bickering in the car, since they don't have cell phones to text with. It makes for a a well spent family time in the car.

Change Ryodan's reader
Revisado: 03-04-19
The story is fantastic, and Dani's voice was fine with inflection and tone. I felt Ryo's voice was flat and did not change in tone much. His voice always sounded the same wether he was excited, angry, passionate, anything. It all seemed the same. I'd rather read the book instead.
