I’ve just moved to london and am very interested to learn about the history. So I was excited to pick up this book. I really tried with this one — listening to 6 hours in the hopes that it would get better, but it never did. After the 6 hours, in addition to being deathly bored, I had also learned little to nothing. So I decided to cut my losses and give up on the book.

The author doesn’t actually tell you about the history of London in an overview fashion or even connect dots from one period to another. Instead, he picks random anecdotes from that period in history and tells you about “a baker on a certain street” and a million such other examples of whatever they were doing on a particular day. And the book is literally just hundreds of these anecdotes strung together without any real purpose. I found this to be a frustrating and very inefficient way to learn anything. I rarely give up on a book once I’ve started it, but this is easily one of the worst books I’ve read in years.

Aaron is a dear friend, a mentor, and one of the first people I turn to whenever I’m struggling with a difficult life decision. What makes Aaron a great coach is not just that he’s one of the smartest people I know (which he is), but rather his ability to boil very complex concepts into advice that seems so obvious that it makes you wonder why you hadn’t thought of it yourself. This book is a wonderful example of that principle. Told through fun and easy anecdotes, it is packed full of so many great ideas that it might take multiple listens to fully internalize all of them. There will undoubtedly be some ideas that you’ve probably heard before and others that you might not have. However, what I love about Suspend Your Disbelief, is the entertaining way in which they’re presented. You’re bound to pick up some stories that will stick with you for a long time reinforcing the principles long after you’ve finished the book…and isn’t that the sign of a truly good anecdote? I will be listening to this one many times over!

Within 1 hour of starting this book, I kept questioning the “facts” the author was presenting because they sounded quite suspect. However, I decided to give it a chance for another couple hours despite my better judgement. Then around the 3 hour mark the author used multiple example which I knew to be completely false and the author lost all credibility in my eyes. 1) He claimed that YouTube was started as a way to share funny video. That is absolutely NOT true. The co-founder of YouTube was a couple ahead of me in undergrad and gave our commencement speech, in which he stated that YouTube was originally founded as a dating site, and then they pivoted. 2) He gave an example of Howard Hughes as one of the worst businessmen of all time as the author claimed that all of Hughes’ ventures lost money and claimed that all of his wealth came from his father’s tool company. This sounded wrong to me so I looked it up. Based on what I could find (source - entrepreneur.com) Hughes inherited his father’s company which was worth $1M at the time of the inheritance and when Hughes died, his net worth was $2B. His properties, “combined with Hughes Tool and other real estate holdings” gave Hughes an estimated net worth of $1B. So there is just no way that his entire net worth came only from the Tool company even after he squandered away all his money, as the author claims.

Just a total garbage book with completely inaccurate “facts”. I honestly don’t understand how books with such clearly false information can get published without the author being sued.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Phil Knight has an amazing story and it is told in a very captivating manner in this book. I thought the book was very well-paced: providing enough detail without being long-winded. It was a joy to listen to and hard to put down. Especially fascinating for anyone with dreams of entrepreneurship...helps provide a life-long prospective from one of the titans.

Any additional comments?

Books such as these are only as impactful as the examples they provide to drive their point home. There are a couple decent stories in this one, but as a whole, this entire book seems really forced. The admiral takes mediocre/somewhat mundane stories and tries to drive home a point that is a huge stretch. The fact that every chapter starts with "if you want to change the world" only makes this more comical. Overall, this book amounts to little more than fortune cookie advice...the takeaways may be good, but without context, they fall on deaf ears.
