Historia
Raised on the battlefield and in the most beautiful Moorish palace in the world, sent to England alone at the age of 16 to take her place in a court where she couldn't speak the language, and abandoned and forced to endure poverty after the death of her husband, Katherine remained a woman of indomitable spirit, unwavering faith, and extraordinary strength. Philippa Gregory brings to life one of history's most inspiring women and creates one of the most compelling characters in historical fiction.

Just okay
Revisado: 07-17-24
I’m listening to all the books in this series and this one was less than half the time than the others. I don’t think there is enough here. The performance sounded AI-ish at times. I love this series but this was my least favorite and it’s a little disappointing.

Great story
Revisado: 06-29-24
As a Tudor historian, I really enjoyed this and I’m looking forward to the next volume in the series.
This may sound odd but there was something that almost caused me to stop listening more than once. Whenever young Princes Edward and Richard were part of the narrative, the tone of things changed. I understand that was to highlight their importance but the word “boy” was used over and over and over, as well as a few phrases repeatedly over-used in reference to them. It seemed rather strange, repetitive and distracting. I started to count the number of times “boy” was said instead of paying attention to the story. With the exception of the Edward and Richard parts, it was great.

Historia
At the height of the Middle Ages in the 14th century, King Edward III of England is determined to use any means necessary to expand his power and gain control of England's bitter rival, France. His own son, Edward, prince of Wales, is far from immune from his political plans. And when Joan of Kent, now free from exile, sees her chance for revenge, she takes it. A calculated plot to scandalize the royal family for revenge for her father's downfall and execution soon turns into the most surprising thing: love.

Good
Revisado: 11-20-23
I enjoyed this fairly well. The repetition of the relationship situation and interactions between Edward and Joan over the years for old. Good read but I started to lose interest at various points in the story because there was no surprise to it.

Historia
Although he didn’t create absolutism in France, King Louis XIV seemed to embody the divine right of kings better than anyone had before him. Louis XIV directly correlated his own private good with that of the public good, but not everyone in France had the same sentiment. The resistance from the French nobles and aristocrats that Louis depended on to raise armies gave these nobles increasing autonomy and independence from the king, which would one day come to a head.

Disappointed
Revisado: 11-02-23
This is more about France during Louis’s reign than Louis himself. I neglected to look at the timing and this is only a 53 minute listen. I was expecting a full length book so I wasted a credit on something I should have been able to listen to for free on YouTube. Good performance by the reader but other than that, this is a miss for me.

Fabulous!
Revisado: 07-08-23
I loved this and think it’s great that Tracy narrated this herself. I was surprised by all of the details about how Anne influenced Elizabeth, as this isn’t something we typically hear. Highly recommend this to anyone interested in Anne or Elizabeth (or both).

Historia
Until the mass hysteria of the seventeenth century, accusations of witchcraft in England were rare. However, four royal women, related in family and in court ties - Joan of Navarre, Eleanor Cobham, Jacquetta of Luxembourg, and Elizabeth Woodville - were accused of practicing witchcraft in order to kill or influence the king. In Royal Witches, Gemma Hollman explores the lives and the cases of these so-called witches, placing them in the historical context of 15th-century England, a setting rife with political upheaval and war.

I’m having trouble finishing this because of the narrator. I find her speech pattern distracting and it’s unfortunate because this is one of my favorite topics. I’ll buy the paperback.
