Among the women of Greek mythology, the witch Medea may be the most despised. Known for the brutal act of killing her own children to exact vengeance on her deceitful husband, Jason, the leader of the Argonauts, Medea has carved out a singularly infamous niche in our histories.

Terrible narrator
Revisado: 01-07-25
I'm only on chapter 3, but this is going to be a return. The narrator is atrocious. The delivery is a constant variation of average speech and breathy, whispery, and difficult to hear. Male voices "shound like thish" with the 's' being pronounced as 'sh'. I don't think I've ever returned a book based solely on the narrator. This shall be a firSHt. Historia
Two words: the bullet. That's all it takes to shatter her life. Caroline Cashion is beautiful, intelligent, a professor of French literature. But in a split second, everything she's known is proved to be a lie. A single bullet, gracefully tapered at one end, is found lodged at the base of her skull. Caroline is stunned. It makes no sense: She has never been shot. She has no entry wound, no scar. Then, over the course of one awful evening, she learns the truth.

Awful
Revisado: 02-11-21
Pretentious, entitled, insufferable drama queen protagonist. Narrator makes it worse. It is rare for me to not finish a book, but I couldn't make myself continue with this one. I wanted to know who pulled the trigger, but more than that, I wished they had succeeded and spared me having to endure Caroline Cashion. Truly awful all around.

I love Laverne Cox as an actor and a human being, but her narration of this book is awful. I tried multiple times to finish it and couldn't. *sigh* I REALLY REALLY wanted to love it. The best I can muster is, "Ugh!"

Historia
The problem with Alex Nicholas is he won't stay dead. Death Never Sleeps is a unique crime thriller featuring artificial intelligence; a story of two very different brothers, Michael Nicholas, a corporate CEO, and Alex Nicholas, a major NYC illegal gambling figure. When Alex is murdered, the deeper mystery unfolds as Michael struggles to close down his brother's business, instead becoming enmeshed in it. As he becomes the target of his brother's killers, he discovers that Alex left a duplicate of himself on a hidden laptop computer.

Interesting concept and well executed story
Revisado: 05-16-14
I found this author on Twitter... or he found me...? Whichever... I follow a lot of authors on Twitter.
Anyway... I decided to check out the book. Lo and behold, it was on Audible, the narrator sounded good in the sample, and I had a credit. The summary and Amazon reviews provided me with just enough info to decide to give it a shot. The idea of uploading consciousness to a digital format intrigues me... not because I think it's possible, but because it's a really cool idea that get the imagination going... like flying horses.
Plot summary is right on: 2 brothers, very different lifestyles, the shady one gets whacked, the "good" one reluctantly takes over the shady business intending to shut it down, but then he finds his brother's consciousness uploaded to his computer. From there... murder, mystery, suspense...
Let's get the negative commentary out of the way first. I found Michael to be... well... a bit bipolar. Sometimes, he was a pretentious ass. Other times, he was just a regular guy. I don't know if this was on purpose, but I found the pretentious side very unlikable. As for the performance... I tend to be a bit nit-picky, so the few mispronunciations the narrator made were annoying (especially Hermes). Otherwise, Goodman's performance was very good.
Other than those two relatively minor issues, the story was great. It moved along at a nice pace. was entertaining and it kept me guessing most of the way through. Simon writes clearly, keeps the story flowing, and throws in just enough red herrings to provide suspense without frustration or confusion. I'm happy with the resolution at the end, making it a complete book, while still leaving just enough thread dangling to begin weaving a sequel tale. (Yes, please!)
I recommend giving this one a shot. I'm glad I did. (And my BF, who I share audiobooks with liked it, too... so two thumbs up.)

Historia
Budo is lucky as imaginary friends go. He's been alive for more than five years, which is positively ancient in the world of imaginary friends. But Budo feels his age, and thinks constantly of the day when eight-year-old Max Delaney will stop believing in him. When that happens, Budo will disappear. Max is different from other children. Some people say that he has Asperger's Syndrome, but most just say he's "on the spectrum." None of this matters to Budo, who loves Max and is charged with protecting him from the class bully.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!!
Revisado: 05-10-14
I love Budo. His unconditional acceptance and love of Max is heartwarming and inspiring. Yes, I know he's imaginary, but that doesn't make him any less real. (You'll see.) Matthew Dicks created one of the most charming, lovable characters I've ever met. He injects humor, warmth, and an insight into what it's like to be "on the spectrum" as well as the challenges for those who love someone "on the spectrum". This is a beautiful story... alternately funny, heartbreaking and thought provoking. (Great narration, too!) Do yourself a favor. Even if you don't have an available credit, buy this book. It's THAT good!

Review for the whole trilogy
Revisado: 05-10-14
Robert J. Sawyer is one of my all-time favorite authors. In this trilogy, he delivers yet another fantastic story. He weaves in technical and scientific detail without being pretentious or condescending. His characters are expertly developed over the trilogy, and one can't help caring about them. It's a great series and I would recommend planning on listening to/ reading the entire trilogy. The first two books leave off feeling incomplete... because they are. But the third book does resolve nicely.

STOP. You should not have touched this flyer with your bare hands. NO, don't put it down. It's too late. They're watching you. My name is David Wong. My best friend is John. Those names are fake. You might want to change yours. You may not want to know about the things you'll read on these pages, about the sauce, about Korrok, about the invasion, and the future. But it's too late. You touched the book. You're in the game. You're under the eye. The only defense is knowledge. You need to read this book, to the end. Even the part with the bratwurst. Why?

Is this what an acid trip is like?
Revisado: 05-10-14
Weird start. Weird middle. Weird end. I think I enjoyed it. I laughed a lot. It's completely different from what I normally read/ listen to. I'd probably listen to it again... just to see if it really is as weird as I thought the first time around... and to see if I missed any jokes.
Did I mention it is weird? Because it is. And I'm pretty sure that's a good thing. Decide for yourself. It's worth the credit.

Even better than the first time I read it!
Revisado: 05-10-14
I read this way back in ancient times, when the hardcover book was covered in dragon skin. I always intended to go back and read it again, but never got around to it until I found it on audiobook. Oh joy! I've listened to it twice. A great story. Not "typical" King. (He wrote this book for his daughter who requested something with a bit less gore.) King is a masterful storyteller regardless of genre, and I always get lost in the worlds he creates. I love this book. And Bronson Pinchot does a fantastic job narrating.
