Review

What an interesting story! A CIA analyst asks for and gets a plum assignment, hops an a plane for Singapore, chats up a charming and well-dressed English Dame before, uh-oh, flight problems that cause the plane to land at a black site in Iran! Said Dame is instrumental in assisting him later in the story. I picture played by. Helen Mirren.

Our hero takes a few unfortunate pics when deplaning, which leads to some unfriendly interrogation that includes physical assault.

I am now calling our hero Hard Rubber Man, because throughout the story he is captured and recaptured, assaulted, starved and dehydrated, but he always gets away somehow.

After his first of many escapes, HRM wanders in the Iranian desert wilderness, kills a goat herder, but fails to shoot the goat. After staggering around, falling down and generally not knowing where he his, he comes across an injured nomad child and takes him back to his village. You would think that the village would be joyful at this. No. Because HRM later spoke to an unaccompanied and unmarried young woman, condemning her and her family to eternal shame and the fires of hell.

I fell asleep somewhere around here…sorry…I think there were several adventures: sailing to Dubai in a stolen boat; escaping from Dubai in a container aboard a tanker; arriving in France eventually, stealing a sailboat to get to England, and at almost the end of the story, OH NO! HRM is in deep do-do!

Complex, many layered, hit me deep…

I loved the story within a story, a masterful interplay of past and present, deeply complex characters, and in the end, my heart was crying. Best King novel I have read, way outside the supernatural and deeply enjoyable. The narrator was superb, and made the characters clearly defined and believable.

A very disturbing book

A lot of Bible quotes, but not a Believer based book. Really gruesome dismembering incidents. Angel, Demon or Human with attributes of both. Loves does not conquer all in the end, the middle or the beginning.

I disliked the transition of the Krampus legend to the US...and the connection with Santa as an entity with mysterious spirits was, oh how to say it...stupid. I thoroughly disliked the story.

Possibly the most unlistenable book ever.

If you want to spend hours and hours in the presence of a madwoman, you will enjoy this book. I only made it abound half-way through before I wanted to stuff skewers in my ears.

Seriously disappointed

The story was boring for a long time, then gruesome for a short time (fortunately, given the kind of "grue") and then it was over! Jack had more sex in this story but drank less coffee, and I fell asleep too many times to remember the end. Did he go to Chicago with the delucious Ms. Chan? Not interested enough to relisten and find out.

This is possibly the most depressing book I have ever listened to. The narrator was okay but didn't handle Irish Scottish English accents very well when changing from one to the other. There wasn't a really big deal for me because the story was so depressing that I didn't really care about the narration. If I hadn't been doing housework and gardening and going for a walk while I listen to this I probably would not of even finished. I love Kate Atkinson's other work this one give it a pass.

Loved this book!

It took a while to get used to the "return to yesterday" story construction, but it was worth it! I suggest you not listen to it before you fall asleep as you do have to pay attention.
