Historia
To get a sense of the kind of prestige that Claude Monet enjoys within the art world, one need only learn that his Le Bassin Aux Nympheás (1919) - from his series of paintings featuring water lilies - sold for the equivalent of more than $70 million. This is a staggering price, especially considering that early in his life, Monet had been so poor and debt-ridden that some of his paintings were taken from him by creditors.

Distraction mispronunciations.
Revisado: 01-30-24
According to this narrator, the river that flows through Paris is pronounced “sign.” The artist Degas’s name is variously “day-gas,” or “day-gus.”
Gauguin is “gaw gun.” Even regular English words are mangled such as anachronistic spoken with “Anna crone”

But when Max’s ex-wife arrives on the scene, ahead of Max and Libby's long-awaited nuptials, things go from bad to worse.

Not really a mystery
Revisado: 03-02-23
The story is a ramble through the lives of small village people and dogs. The people receive threatening emails which is the mystery but the reader receives no clue about the meaning until the last 20 minutes or so.
The only good part of this was the humorous treatment of the dogs. Even with that the best adjectives for this would be trite, disjointed, gossipy, and ham-handed.
No up to some of the author’s other work.

Historia
Middle-aged and deeply depressed, Jim arrives in California from Alaska and surrenders himself to the care of his brother Gary, who intends to watch over him. Swinging unpredictably from manic highs to extreme lows, Jim wanders ghost-like through the remains of his old life attempting to find meaning in his tattered relationships with family and friends. As sessions with his therapist become increasingly combative and his connections to others seem ever more tenuous, Jim is propelled forward by his thoughts, which have the potential to lead him, despairingly, to his end.

Not for everyone.

Vann’s works are dark but beautifully constructed and effective in exploring human frailty or darkness.

A great introduction to modern Irish history
Revisado: 05-23-22
A succinct and balanced overview of 500 years. It will make more detailed treatments of specific eras much more accessible.
Gibney threads his way through tough issues like the question of blame for the Great Famine without yield to an obvious bias. That said, even a balance view leaves the British looking like abusive imperialists.

Great performance of great novel
Revisado: 04-13-22
The often repeated assertion that Anna Karenina is the greatest Russian novel is fully defended in this performance. Gyllenhaal creates her various voice for characters with subtlety. Her pacing is flawless.
The story itself remains relevant on so many levels. It explores intimate relationships, the boundaries of friendship, the gulf between roach and poor, the sources of moral authority and more. Best of all it is beautiful prose lavished on a great story.

Historia
Bryan Stevenson was a young lawyer when he founded the Equal Justice Initiative, a legal practice dedicated to defending those most desperate and in need: the poor, the wrongly condemned, and women and children trapped in the farthest reaches of our criminal justice system. One of his first cases was that of Walter McMillian, a young man who was sentenced to die for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit. The case drew Bryan into a tangle of conspiracy, political machination, and legal brinksmanship—and transformed his understanding of mercy and justice forever.

Mandatory reading
Revisado: 03-01-16
This should be read by anyone who seeks justice, hopes for racial healing, or wants to understand race in the US fully. If you think you believe in capital punishment or that we are post-racial, then this is a must read. It will test your beliefs against a full measure of reality.
