Maps have a mysterious hold over us. Whether ancient, crumbling parchments or generated by Google, maps tell us things we want to know, not only about our current location or where we are going but about the world in general. And yet, when it comes to geo-politics, much of what we are told is generated by analysts and other experts who have neglected to refer to a map of the place in question.

great writing elevated by a great performance
Revisado: 01-05-24
If your reading this review, then this book is exactly what your hoping it will be. The level of detail of how geography and man's limitations within it to help explain where we are today was awesome. but it was even more fun as I personally enjoyed the oration performance, and thought it gave the story a bit of flair beyond simply describing terrains. Would highly recommend on all fronts

Historia
For the modern major-league team, player evaluation is a complex, multipronged, high-tech pursuit. But far from becoming obsolete in this environment - as Michael Lewis' Moneyball once forecast - the role of the scout in today's game has evolved and even expanded. Rather than being the antithesis of a data-driven approach, scouting now represents an essential analytical component in a team's arsenal. Future Value is a thorough dive into the world of the contemporary scout - a world with its own language, methods, metrics, and madness.

Deep Dive for such an all encompassing book
Revisado: 11-05-22
the book overall is great. the mixture of history and context setting to help inform the reader of how we got here and how the game go evolve is a great wY to present the info. I particularly enjoy the candor from scouts that makes baseball fun but is rarely glimpsed by the public.
The only negatives I have are the tables , while thorough, can drone on for a bit and affect the cadence of the book; and the narrator, bless his heart, mispronounced a few baseball terms and names that were hard to ignore, like pronouncing Velo as "Vell-o" rather than "Vee-lo"

Supremely entertaining
Revisado: 10-07-22
these types of "trivia" books are my favorite, so I'm probably biased, but that was easily one of the more entertaining books I've listened to. The premise overall is great, but the structure of exploring each question, the tone of address the quirkiness of humans and the richness of how the lives these "individuals" were described has this high on my list of books to revisit!

Historia
We are in a historic era for the home run. The 2019 season saw the most homers ever, obliterating a record set just two years before. It is a shift that has transformed the way the game is played, contributing to more strikeouts, longer games, and what feels like the logical conclusion of the analytics era. In Swing Kings, Wall Street Journal national baseball writer Jared Diamond reveals that the secret behind this unprecedented shift isn’t steroids or the stitching of the baseballs, it’s the most elemental explanation of all: the swing.

I was really impressed with the depth of this book without getting too technical. the terminology used can be cryptic for non baseball fans but the author really balanced giving context without getting bogged down. if you watched baseball over the last decade, this book does a wonderful job of explaining the changes you've witnessed

Great Book, Quirky Performance
Revisado: 06-03-22
So the book itself was great but I found the reading off it to be slightly strange I thought the voice was pleasant overall and not enough to prevent me from recommending this book. But some of the "impersonations" were distracting, and there were a couple mispronunciations that caught me off guard.
still a good book, definitely worth a listen

Loved this book, the depth on some of the more specific quirks in English is honestly the perfect level of entertainment at certain times and this book nails it. To think I could I have studied linguistics and been able to enjoy this as a profession, I feel like I'm missing out!

The Secret Lives of Color tells the unusual stories of 75 fascinating shades, dyes, and hues. From blonde to ginger, the brown that changed the way battles were fought to the white that protected against the plague, Picasso’s blue period to the charcoal on the cave walls at Lascaux, acid yellow to kelly green, and from scarlet women to imperial purple, these surprising stories run like a bright thread throughout history. In this book, Kassia St. Clair has turned her lifelong obsession with colors and where they come from into a unique study of human civilization.

Historia
We are familiar with maps that outline all 50 states. And we are also familiar with the idea that the United States is an "empire", exercising power around the world. But what about the actual territories - the islands, atolls, and archipelagos - this country has governed and inhabited? In How to Hide an Empire, author Daniel Immerwahr tells the fascinating story of the United States outside the United States. In crackling, fast-paced prose, he reveals forgotten episodes that cast American history in a new light.
