Historia
Welcome to the Homeric Rhapsody podcast! These brief meditations will be renderings of Homer’s poem in Greek, following the new theory of the Greek accent from my Oxford book, The Dance of the Muses: Choral Theory and Ancient Greek Poetics. After the Greek, I shall perform my impression of the lines in English. The rhapsodes were solo performers of Homer who declaimed in a theatre, draping a traveler’s cloak and wielding a long staff as a multivalent prop. So there was more to Homeric rhapsody than the audio. Yet how remarkable and unique is Homer’s text, whose rhythm originally ...

Historia
Many of us are familiar with the epic stories and legends of the classical world. This anthology, the only one of its kind on audiobook, gives an insight into a more lyrical and tender aspect of Greek and Roman literature. From Homer's lofty lines on the loves of the gods to the earthier verse of Catullus to his mistress Lesbia, this recording encompasses the major love poetry written between the 8th century B.C. and the 2nd century A.D.

Awesome, for those who love verse
Revisado: 09-20-21
Love poetry, especially to the ancients, seems more honest here than sentimental, with poems more about oozing heartbreak and the harsh realities of love, of Gods having their ways and the consequences of love. But there are definitely dishes here for the sentimental as well. Fantastic reading, accompanied by dreamy classical music selections played at the start and not interrupting the readings.

Masters of language can turn unassuming words into phrases that are beautiful, effective, and memorable. What are the secrets of this alchemy? Part of the answer lies in rhetorical figures: practical ways of applying great aesthetic principles to a simple sentence or paragraph. Farnsworth’s Classical English Rhetoric recovers this knowledge for our times. It amounts to a tutorial on eloquence conducted by Churchill and Lincoln, Dickens and Melville, Burke and Paine, and more than a hundred others.

Inspired by the chaos of the French Revolution, Rafael Sabatini wrote one of the finest historical novels of the early 20th century. It's been almost 70 years since this masterful adventure has been adapted for the big screen, and still, it's never fully been done justice. This is a sweeping, epic adventure for the intellect that in my mind would make a hell of a blockbuster, but I'm starting to think that won't happen. But, never fear, this fast-paced audiobook holds up to the sort of entertainment you'd expect from a bingeable series, is the strongest narration of the story I've heard, and is a perfect story, with no added fluff.

Ian Holm is truly a master. His narration makes you feel as if he marked out every line for subtext, when, in reality, it was probably just a cold read. The writing is masterful, literary genuis and flowing. Gripping Victorian suspense.
