Historia
On the surface, Alice is exactly where she thinks she should be: She’s just given birth to a beautiful baby girl, Dawn; her charming husband, Steve—a white academic whose area of study is conveniently her own Mohawk culture—is nothing but supportive; and they’ve moved into a new home in a posh Toronto neighborhood. But Alice could not feel like more of an impostor. She isn’t connecting with her daughter, a struggle made even more difficult by the recent loss of her own mother, and every waking moment is spent hiding her despair from Steve and their ever-watchful neighbors.

To live, I think you have to fall
Revisado: 07-04-24
This was enjoyably frustrating. I never knew, like Alice, who to trust in her world.
This book hits home in a lot of ways with my own family and that thin line between being connected to the world around you and mental illness. I think the world, from Alice's viewpoint, written so well by Alicia Elliott, is terrifying, beautiful, sad and so filled with love.
It's a great listen, well written, and one of those stories you'll come back to.

I love Michelle, her humor and life shines through all of her work and this book is no exception. I was engaged all the way through; I laughed and cried (sometimes at the same time) and it really felt like I was sitting beside one of my friends listening to them on a roll about everything and nothing, but with fireworks. Cuz Michelle lights it up. More than likely, you're a fan come here like myself, to get a peek into someone's life, someone who makes you laugh and possibly pee your panties.
Don't lie! But do remember your kegel exercises, you WILL need them.
Opening up to not just another person, but an untold number of strangers is no easy task and Michelle told us her story, invited us in, beautifully.
If you want a story that gets you pumped at being a Boss beep beep (ya know) and you want to get to know not only a wonderfully talented comedian but a really interesting person, I recommend this book.

Historia
The opening sentence of John Irving's breakout novel, The World According to Garp, signals the start of sexual violence, which becomes increasingly political. "Garp's mother, Jenny Fields, was arrested in Boston in 1942 for wounding a man in a movie theater." Jenny is an unmarried nurse; she becomes a single mom and a feminist leader, beloved but polarizing. Her son, Garp, is less beloved, but no less polarizing.

Humanity and Hope
Revisado: 12-29-22
I grew up on the movie, of which I loved profusely. However, this is one of those many occasions where the written word is far better than the cinematic version; though I do still love that movie.
Within this world of Garp, our world, we experience our own shortcomings. Though there are few characters within the novel that I have much in common with; I think that in the end, you find that the commonality is far more than expected and not solely with one character.
And I love the stories within the story, Garps work within Irving's.
In this anniversary addition, John Irving related his concerns that the story fit so well the issues today, issues that have not changed in forty years. I cannot disagree, even the movie that lacks the full heart of the story, upon recent watching, made me painfully aware of how far we've yet to go. It frightens me as it did Garp, I want to throw the norm to the wind like Jenny, and I want to use my heart and kindness towards others like Roberta.
Ah, Roberta. Both written and in film, Roberta was my favorite. Adults think so little of children and how they see the world. I knew, even as a small kid, what Roberta was. I was the last of the generations who's parents didn't really concern themselves with movie ratings and I grew up watching a lot of things that people might perceive as inappropriate. I knew what homosexuality was, about Trans people, about people of different cultures and lifestyles. So Roberta, she didn't shock me, I wasn't confused. Film or book, she was one of the few characters that I really wanted more of.
I praise the book mostly though, because of how human it is. Garp helps people, he is even seen as a hero for a bit of the story; but he is not perfect and makes mistakes that are not always easily forgiven. Other characters are also shown with no rose tinted glasses; Helen, John Wolf, Jenny. They show that you can love and hate a person within moments of either feeling, that you can pity and celebrate at the same time.
I suppose this tells you very little of the actual book; in fact, I may confuse anyone willing enough to read reviews on here. Though perhaps you're like myself, love a bit of written word, and will find this a convincing enough praise to purchase this book.
It is well written, it is no period piece as John Irving says himself, and perhaps you can find yourself within the pages.
Beware the undertoad, however!

Historia
Shuggie’s mother Agnes walks a wayward path: She is Shuggie’s guiding light but a burden for him and his siblings. She dreams of a house with its own front door while she flicks through the pages of the Freemans catalogue, ordering a little happiness on credit, anything to brighten up her grey life. Married to a philandering taxi-driver husband, Agnes keeps her pride by looking good - her beehive, make-up, and pearly-white false teeth offer a glamourous image of a Glaswegian Elizabeth Taylor.

Beautiful and Heartbreaking
Revisado: 11-25-20
This story really takes you through so many emotions. You both dislike and love the characters as they grow and change. Myself, I can't help but feel a tenderness for Agnes; as she reminded me of my own mother in many ways. Seeing the world through Shuggies eyes, both naive and jaded, almost makes you want to clutch the child to your chest. The narration was well done as well.
Great listen!

Historia
From New York Times best-selling author Stephen Graham Jones comes a novel that is equal parts psychological horror and cutting social commentary on identity politics and the American-Indian experience. Fans of Jordan Peele and Tommy Orange will love this story as it follows the lives of four American-Indian men and their families, all haunted by a disturbing, deadly event that took place in their youth. Years later, they find themselves tracked by an entity bent on revenge, totally helpless as the culture and traditions they left behind catch up to them in a vengeful way.

Well done
Revisado: 10-08-20
I thought this was a wonderfully well done book. Jones spun a tale that was both refreshingly original yet hauntingly familiar. I grew up on stories past down from the old timers and my favorite ones were the kind that made sleep uneasy.
Also, can't lie, as a horror movie fan, I love the gore factor.
The performance was really good too, Shaun has a good strong voice that carries each character well.
All in all, great book, great listen, highly recommended!

Touching
Revisado: 10-08-18
I absolutely loved this book and I was thrilled that the narrator was the author herself; for a story can be that more touching when the emotions and struggles and joys are first hand.
This is a great look into the lives of others who are so different and yet, for myself, so eerily familiar.
Khalida Brohi gave herself to this book, a little piece of herself to tell her story, her countries story. You can feel her emotions and her words pull you along side of her.
With each hurdle of her life, each mistake and correction, you find a sense of fellowship with this amazing woman who gives so much.

Excellent read/listen
Revisado: 06-20-18
I stumbled across this after being given suggestions from a previous series of books, aligned with the same snarky and wholly relatable humor and speed.
I grew up with a huge love of scifi, with this elaborate and fantastically unrealistic idea of what it might be like to live out in such a world.
As an adult, my world is less rose tinted and more dirty smudged.
So very quickly into this book, with it's deeply flawed antihero and his harpy of a sidekick (or maybe I've got that backwards) I realized this was just the story for me.
I loved the characters, I loved the humor and I loved the visual and idea of the world created.
I'm also a fan of the author being the one to perform the audiobook. while his voice does not do the exaggerating change in tones and depths like so many others, there is a subtle change and in the way he words as he speaks, to differentiate between the characters and their moods.
