very helpful. I had to pause several times to take it in. not for the faint of heart. Was very helpful towards accountability in close relationships, demonstrated balance, and compassion for all people.

Historia
Elizabeth Lesser believes that if women’s voices had been equally heard and respected throughout history, humankind would have followed different hero myths and guiding stories - stories that value caretaking, champion compassion, and elevate communication over vengeance and violence. Cassandra Speaks is about the stories we tell and how those stories become the culture. It’s about the stories we still blindly cling to, and the ones that cling to us: the origin tales, the guiding myths, the religious parables, the literature and films and fairy tales passed down....

Historia
David Starr Jordan was a taxonomist, a man possessed with bringing order to the natural world. In time, he would be credited with discovering nearly a fifth of the fish known to humans in his day. When his specimen collections were demolished by lightning, by fire, and eventually by the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, many might have given up, given in to despair. But Jordan? He surveyed the wreckage at his feet, found the first fish that he recognized, and confidently began to rebuild his collection. And this time, he introduced one clever innovation.

Historia
Why did Paul Gauguin abandon middle-class life to follow the path of a starving artist? What inspired Bill Gates to give away so much of his hard-won fortune? How has Donald Trump succeeded so excessively, when his winning style could easily be his greatest liability? As the renowned emotion researcher Jessica Tracy reveals in Take Pride, each of these superachievers has been motivated by an often maligned emotion: pride.

good

great book. the authors insistence to include exacting strategies for how and why she collected data and came to her conclusions was at times tedious to get through, especially at the beginning but was worth the read overall.

Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

good and okay until the last 2-3 chapters
Revisado: 10-19-16
I enjoyed listening to the book alright. the themes where helpful and interesting. the authors habit of compare/contrast between essentialism and nonessentialism became tedious. I'm finding in books by entrepreneurs okay until the last 3 chapters when suddenly their technique of getting something done or creating healthy habits turn out to be their religion, and they feel the need to tell you how to use the information they've presented. Not acknowledging this practice of answeing 'how to live' without considering the field of theology (which has devoted thousands of years to answering this question) makes the entire point of the last 2-3 chapters lacking.

What does it mean to devote yourself wholly to helping others? In Strangers Drowning, Larissa MacFarquhar seeks out people living lives of extreme ethical commitment and tells their deeply intimate stories; their stubborn integrity and their compromises; their bravery and their recklessness; their joys and defeats, and wrenching dilemmas. A couple adopts two children in distress. But then they think: If they can change two lives, why not four? Or 10? They adopt 20.
