Poorly written, poorly narrated
Revisado: 08-20-24
While I find the topic to be generally pretty intriguing, this book was difficult to get through. The writing style is very informal and is at times pretty cringeworthy. The narrator comes off as arrogant and his tone is quite distracting. I wish he had just stuck to the facts instead of peppering the stories with unnecessary personal commentary.

Historia
In 1956, a stunned world watched as the famous Italian ocean liner Andrea Doria sank after being struck by a Swedish vessel off the coast of Nantucket. Unlike the Titanic, this sinking played out in real time across radios and televisions, the first disaster of the modern age. Audiences witnessed it all: the unthinkable collision of two modern vessels equipped with radar; perilous hours of uncertainty; the heroic rescue of passengers, and the final gasp as the pride of the Italian fleet slipped beneath the Atlantic, taking some 50 lives with her.

Extremely Boring
Revisado: 07-22-23
I didn’t like anything about this book. The narrator is rather monotone is his delivery and there are way too many details and descriptions of little importance. I really tried to stick with it, but couldn’t. Wouldn’t recommend.

Historia
In the span of fifteen years, Dr. Thomas Neill Cream murdered as many as ten people in the United States, Britain, and Canada, a death toll with almost no precedent. Poison was his weapon of choice. Largely forgotten today, this villain was as brazen as the notorious Jack the Ripper. The Case of the Murderous Dr. Cream exposes the blind trust given to medical practitioners, as well as the flawed detection methods, bungled investigations, corrupt officials, and stifling morality of Victorian society that allowed Dr. Cream to prey on vulnerable and desperate women.

“Modernized” 😦
Revisado: 04-14-19
I love Agatha Christie’s work and have quite a few titles by her in my library. I’m a huge fan of dramatizations/performances, but this one missed the mark. The performance itself was fine, but I didn’t enjoy the “modernized” versions. The words “computer”, “mobile phone”, and “dot com” shouldn’t exist in the vocabulary of a Christie story. Disappointed. Returned after listening to the first chapter.

Revisado: 01-03-17
I'm sorry, but the narrator for this audiobook is just abysmal. I actually enjoy many of the author's whose works are showcased in this book, and was excited to see such a large collection all in one place. Unfortunately the narrator makes listening to the stories impossible. Inflection, intonation were just terrible, and it seems she narrates all of the stories included. This was a huge disappointment. Returned it shortly after purchase.

Historia
In The Art of the English Murder, Lucy Worsley explores this phenomenon in forensic detail, revisiting notorious crimes like the Ratcliff Highway Murders, which caused a nationwide panic in the early 19th century, and the case of Frederick and Maria Manning, the suburban couple who were hanged after killing Maria's lover and burying him under their kitchen floor. Our fascination with crimes like these became a form of national entertainment, inspiring novels and plays, prose and paintings, poetry and true-crime journalism.

Should Come With a Spoiler Alert
Revisado: 04-15-16
The narrator is not very good. There are lots of mispronunciations and her overall tone is kind of awkward in general. I think that my biggest gripe with this piece however, is that it reveals the endings to several books. If you haven't read Bleak House, The Woman in White, The Moonstone, Death at the Priory or The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher I highly suggest you do so BEFORE listing to this particular book, otherwise, Spoiler Alert!, the endings will be ruined for you. Three of the books, whose plots and conclusions are spelled out, are still in my library, "unread". The latter of the five I finished long ago, and I must say that if I had listened to this book before those two I'd be pretty disappointed with the spoiled endings!

Historia
There have been countless attempts to solve the brutal murders committed by Jack the Ripper more than 100 years ago. It seems that almost everyone has their own theory and their own suspect, ranging from the reasonably likely to the entirely preposterous. What this most famous of British criminal cases has always required is a professional eye to analyse it with all the benefits of modern investigate techniques. Now that has been provided in the shape of the man most qualified to solve the case: former British murder-squad detective Trevor Marriott.

Poorly Written and Poorly Narrated
Revisado: 12-22-15
The narrator of this book sounds like an automaton, though the book is poorly written to begin with so it's not like he had a lot to work with. Every other sentence starts with the word "however". Its use is gratingly repetitive. The author of this book seems to think too highly of his theories and his investigational inquiries. I didn't mind the lengthy section of coroners' notes and witness testimony. Truth be told that was the most interesting part. The last few chapters absolutely reek of pomposity and self aggrandizement. He makes passive aggressive remarks about other published Ripperologists and then has the chutzpah to declare that he, and he alone, has found out the true identity
of Jack the Ripper.

Historia
Haunted by Chuck Palahniuk is a novel made up of stories: twenty-three of them, to be precise. Twenty-three of the most horrifying, hilarious, mind-blowing, stomach-churning tales you'll ever encounter, sometimes all at once. They are told by people who have answered an ad headlined "Writers' Retreat: Abandon Your Life for Three Months", and who are led to believe that here they will leave behind all the distractions of "real life" that are keeping them from creating the masterpiece that is in them.
