What a lovely read. I only recently discovered this author - not my usual genre - and thoroughly enjoyed this book! I could see it playing out before me. Very well read, too.

LOVED IT
Revisado: 07-14-13
What made the experience of listening to Speaks the Nightbird the most enjoyable?
The book was fantastic and the reader perfectly matched. I am tickled that Edoardo Ballerini was also chosen to read the other books in the series, he is spot on. My husband Jim recommended the book before it was available in audio but as an avid listener I'm glad I waited!
What did you like best about this story?
Robert McCannon quickly pulls the reader/listener into the story and continues to draw you in. His characters are fleshed out (and what characters!) , his story well crafted, and his eye to detail is delightful. Mysteries within mysteries abound. And what a picture Mr. McCannon can paint of a historical time! This is an excellent read both for lovers of character driven books and those who prefer plot driven. Readers who enjoyed Ken Follet's "Pillars of the Earth" will love this, I found to be even better. I am definitely looking forward to the next in the series.
Which character – as performed by Edoardo Ballerini – was your favorite?
So many to choose from! The Vaughan women were high on my list, along with the odious ratcatcher...
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
A couple of scenes made me laugh out loud - I will not spoil them- and a few definitely made me cringe.

Historia
Eight hundred women and children begin a 1,200-mile journey on foot across Japanese-occupied Malaya. At journey’s end, only 30 will still be alive. This is the story of one woman, of her ordeal, and of how she was saved by the sacrifice of an Australian soldier. It is a story of rare individual courage in the face of certain death, and hope in the face of despair.

Nonny Frett understands the meanings of "rock" and "hard place" better than any woman ever born. She's got two mothers, "one deaf-blind and the other four baby steps from flat crazy". She's got two men: her husband, who's easing out the back door; and her best friend, who's laying siege to her heart in her front yard. She has a job that holds her in the city, and she's addicted to a little girl who's stuck deep in the country.

Revisado: 07-03-11
This is my third Joshilyn Jackson book and my favorite. The characters are believable and well fleshed out, the story pulled me in, and I enjoyed listening to it from beginning to end. I laughed out loud a few times and actually burst into tears at one point- for the first time in many, many Audible books. Rare indeed is the author who can read their own work well. Barbara Kingsolver and Neil Gaiman are the only others that I knew of but Joshilyn Jackson has definitely joined their ranks!

I am definitely a Neil Gaiman fan, and this is one of my favorites! A fairy tale for grownups, with magic and wonder and wit. Very few writers can read their own work well but Neil Gaiman is the exception to the rule! Beautifully done, and I really enjoyed the interview at the end.

Held my attention!
Revisado: 05-06-11
I have to admit it, the man can write! This one held me until the end. I loved all of the characters (loved to hate a couple of them!) and the plot had plenty of twists. My husband and I both listened to this one and both thoroughly enjoyed it. One caveat- please read the premise of the book. If you are offended by sex in audiobooks, or hate dark murder mysteries, don't download this one. If on the other hand you love well written dark mysteries well read by a pro, enjoy!

Historia
First published in 1816 and generally considered Jane Austen's finest work, Emma is a humorous portrayal of a heroine whose injudicious interferences in the life of a young parlour-boarder in a neighboring village often lead to substantial mortification. Austen brings to life a myriad of engaging characters as she presents a mixture of social classes as she did in Pride and Prejudice.

annoying!
Revisado: 11-14-10
I love Jane Austen, love this story, and love listening to Nadia May. So why couldn't I listen to this book? I'm not sure if it was the tempo (too fast!), the voices she chose for the characters (too sharp and high) or a combination of the two, but this audiobook was incredibly irritating to listen to. I tried several times but finally gave up. The only reason I could give this three stars was that I know the book itself was good.

a classic...and yet?
Revisado: 10-16-10
I really, really wanted to like this one and I listened all the way through hoping that it would grow on me. After all, it's considered to be a classic....Time after time I was annoyed by the main character - sweet, but what a victim she was! Perhaps an accurate picture of the times but annoying none the less.

I had such a good time listening to this book that I didn't want it to end. After Neverwhere I was afraid that Neil Gaiman couldn't capture my imagination so well again....but he did! This is a lovely, well written book with just enough dark to it. And my, can he read his own work! Very unusual. Note: this is not a book for small children but it will appeal to the child in adults.
