Historia
As a young man, Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) escaped from slavery in Baltimore, Maryland. He was fortunate to have been taught to read by his slave owner mistress, and he would go on to become one of the major literary figures of his time. He wrote three versions of his autobiography over the course of his lifetime and published his own newspaper. His very existence gave the lie to slave owners: with dignity and great intelligence, he bore witness to the brutality of slavery.

Historia
A groundbreaking, explosive account of the Kennedy assassination that will rewrite the history of the 20th century's most controversial murder investigation. The questions have haunted our nation for half a century: Was the President killed by a single gunman? Was Lee Harvey Oswald part of a conspiracy? Did the Warren Commission discover the whole truth of what happened on November 22, 1963? Philip Shenon, a veteran investigative journalist who spent most of his career at The New York Times, finally provides many of the answers.

An Excellent if Terrible Story
Revisado: 04-26-21
This true work of literature is beautifully written, but at times difficult to stomach. It is a tale of both hope and horror, as much about the general human condition as it is about the lot of African-American slave.
I would recommend that those who do not wish to expose themselves to the worst violence and cruely that chattel slavery can offer give this book a pass; for all others I give this novel my strongest possible endorsement.

Great Book, but Very Graphic
Revisado: 11-24-20
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes medical mysteries.
Be aware, that the book has some very graphic descriptions of how a hemorrhagic virus attacks and destroys the human body. If you are uncomfortable with blood and guts, give this book a pass.

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Thus is a very long book, but I enjoyed listening to it. Professor Lepore does a great job of contrasting the promise of American ideals with the historical reality.

Historia
The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass was Douglass' third autobiography. In it he was able to go into greater detail about his life as a slave and his escape from slavery, as he and his family were no longer in any danger from the reception of his work. In this engrossing narrative he recounts early years of abuse; his dramatic escape to the North and eventual freedom, abolitionist campaigns, and his crusade for full civil rights for former slaves.

An Inspired Reading of a Fantastic Story
Revisado: 04-05-17
Where does The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I have listened to several excellent audio books. This one ranks among the best.
Which character – as performed by Richard Allen – was your favorite?
Richard Allen does an exemplary job of portraying every character in the book. His reading of the words of Frederick Douglass himself do justice to the articulate, insightful, and forceful gentleman that was Frederick Douglass.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
The book is far too long to listen to in one sitting, and I must admit that there are a few sections, particularly in the several speeches Douglas chose to insert towards the end of the book, where the author gets somewhat wordy, but I found the vast majority of the story wonderfully engaging.
Any additional comments?
This is almost as much a history book as it is an autobiography. In addition to the insight into Douglass' life and character, I also found fascinating Douglass' encounters with many other important historical figures, including several Presidents of the United States, Senators, foreign dignitaries, and abolitionist leaders.
We also experience the stories of slavery, that lead to its downfall, and gain a unique perspective on reconstruction and beyond, as seen through the eyes of an eminent, African American leader.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

A truly excellent read
Revisado: 05-22-16
I am very glad to finally have heard the atory of America's westward expansion from the side of the native Americans. The stories are often sad, often maddening, but they are a part of American history that all Anericans should learn. unfortunately, few of us know more than to recite the names of a few of the most prominent chiefs, and perhaps the fact that Chief Sitting Bull joined Buffalo Bill's Wild West show.
This native peoples' perspective should be added to the standard curriculum in American schools, but until that happens, we all have the opportunity to fill in some of the holes by reading or listening to this book.

Most African Americans, in tracing their family’s past, encounter a series of daunting obstacles. Slavery was a brutally efficient nullifier of identity, willfully denying Black men and women even their names. Here, scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., backed by an elite team of geneticists and researchers, takes 19 extraordinary African Americans on a once unimaginable journey, tracing family sagas through US history and back to Africa.
