Cassia and Lio’s story continues to have me in a chokehold! I’ve never read this many books in a series before and I have taken no breaks. I love all the characters and the twists that came in this book were so great! I’ve already purchased the next book and I’m starting it as soon as I’m done with this review!

I want to start this review off by saying I don’t normally enjoy anything vampire related. They’re not a genre I enjoy BUT I read a few reviews about this series and about how wonderful the characters are, especially Lio and decided to give it a try. I am so glad that I did! I love a slow burn, respectful MMC, and most of all a FMC who is smart and not naive!!! She doesn’t have any secret powers and she isn’t a teenager who randomly becomes amazing at fighting or outwitting everyone around her. Her character growth is slow and steady and believable. The length of this book made me so happy because I never wanted it to end. I immediately purchased all of the other books in the series and I cannot wait to continue their story!

Also a note about the narrators -I’m obsessed with Caren Naess’ accent and pronunciations in this book! Kale Williams also does an amazing job at the accents-not overly done but each character has a very specific tone and it makes it easy and enjoyable to follow. I hope they remain the voice actors for all the proceeding books!

I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters! I love Elise and Valen and their little found family so much! I love that the author didn’t make Elise this ultra powerful fighting prodigy but it didn’t diminish her strength and bravery. I kept waiting for that predictable moment where we discover she’s night folk or has some sort of powers she wasn’t aware of and I’m so grateful that it didn’t happen. I didn’t see the twist at the end in the tomb so that was a fun surprise!
Stina was great as usual with a few pronunciation issues and some overly dramatic acting but overall she does a great job at keeping me in the author’s world and Tim Campbell was just perfect. I did feel like the parts of the night render were kind of random and felt forced in at the very end but then I realized he’s the subject of the next books and it made sense that the author chose to do that although I still believe he doesn’t quite fit this story. Also I hated his accent but that was definitely a personal preference. Overall, it was well done and wrapped up nicely and I wish it didn’t have to end! This was the perfect series to get me out of my slump!

Yes this starts out very similarly to From Blood and Ash which was my first romantacy so I didn’t hate it. It actually follows a very similar format for a lot of the book. But once it deviates it gets so much better! “Who touched her?” Excuse me!? I loved it so much I immediately bought book 2!

I loved the Hunger Games so it isn’t surprising that I liked this book so much! There are so many similarities!
I liked the character of Paedyn even though I feel like the author leaned into “I’m an independent badass woman” a little too much. She was naive when she gave the resistance the info and key without knowing their plan and then being surprised that their plan included threatening the princes but she’s young so I guess that tracks.
The love triangle is sweet and interesting and both main male characters are easy to love and root for.

The use of “distracted” and “sticky buns” was actually funny. I started to count but lost track. I’ve started the second book and it literally begins with the sticky buns again. The author must really love them because no one is allowed to have any other favorite treat and she focuses on them way too much.
I’m looking forward to getting into the second book and I’m sad to see the third won’t be out until next year.

Reading this book feels like constantly waiting for something to happen and always expecting the next chapter to be the one where you get an answer only to end up unsatisfied and completely frustrated.

We get close to zero answers in this book. What is Estrella? Who is the ferryman? Who was the woman in the gem? Why do all the gods bow down to Mab if she’s just a fae queen? What are her powers exactly? Can she only control the people who she puts snakes in? She doesn’t seem powerful enough to have a whole fae land at her mercy. She could have been killed by literally anyone. There were so many unanswered questions and the storyline was so repetitive that I feel like this whole book was unnecessary.

The last chapter made me want to throw the book at my wall. They’re at the finish line and they choke. They don’t complete their bond, they don’t kill the villain even though it seemed like Estrella was powerful enough to do so-if she can cut off her hand why not her head? Why didn’t they just use the secret that Estrella and Caelum’s lives being bound to save Caelum since Mab needs Estrella alive? Instead she have herself to Mab which is something she said she would NEVER do and we’re back to square one. She didn’t even try to kill her or to negotiate. The brother was set up to either be the one to help them blindside Mab or secretly be the next villain, but he’s just killed off randomly for a comment he makes and that’s it.

Also why can Mab kill Caelum when she promised to allow them to complete the bond? Aren’t promises like huge in fairy lore? Plot hole?

“The tree feeds on sex” was the funniest line I’ve read in a book in a long time. Like wtf. The weird exhibitionism kink continuous.

Overall, I like the characters but I read online that this is planned to be a six book series which is actually insane. I feel like the next book will likely be a big side quest and give us even more questions so I might have to pass. I’ll google the answers to my questions when the sixth book comes out if I’m still curious by the.

I’m not one to kink shame, but this author is obviously into exhibitionistm ha. It’s not for me, but you do you. The MCM was much more likable in the second book! The story was great, you just have to get through the first one!

Without spoiling too much the “twist” is very obvious from the get go. The MMC is super unlikeable-his obvious control issues, the way he is obsessed with her way too early on, his creepy use of “my star” and the way the speaker performs his voice makes him sound like a crotchety old guy which is a turn off. The exhibition scene was too much for me I had to laugh and take a break. The big surprise ending was eye rollingly obvious but maybe I just read too much romantacy? The MFC is a complete idiot but that’s a common theme in these kinds of books which is a bummer. Maybe it will get better by the next book?

Cheesy unrealistic teenage drama

The writing is childish and cringe. After the 11th time of hearing everyone call Christian their king, and even the adults at the school care about his relationships and give him so much power-and why? Because he’s attractive? His dad is rich? Everyone there is rich, that was talked about way more than it should have been.
The whole “I’m not like other girls” trope is boring and overdone. Also, Christian is a complete dick to the main character for absolutely no reason.
In the beginning of the book he sees the bruises on her face and literally could not care less even bullying her in front of everyone. But then when she gets hurt again he suddenly cares SO much but nothing had changed. There wasn’t anything that happened that brought them back together- he just decided to start caring? To stop bullying her for something she had nothing to do with? Makes no sense.
I like a little bit of cheese and silliness but the dialogue is gag worthy, the teenage characters are stupid and the adults are completely useless. Definitely written for no one more mature than a 16 year old. Thankfully it was free
