Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Fantastic story...Best Book Ever!!!
Revisado: 01-01-25
I absolutely love Abraham Verghese's writing. He is amazing with the development of his stories. This is by far the best book I have read in the past 20 years. I could read this over and over and still be drawn into each episode. Highly recommended.

Historia
Bea and Awilda have been best friends from the moment Awilda threw her 14-year-old self across Bea’s twin-sized bed as if they had known each other forever. Bubbly, adventurous Awilda taught sheltered, shy Bea how to dress, wear her hair, and what to do with boys. She even introduced Bea to her husband, Lonnie, in college, who pledged to take good care of her for the rest of their lives. But philanderer Lonnie breaks that promise over and over again, leaving Bea to wrestle with her self-esteem and longtime secret addiction.

Reality of friendship betrayal
Revisado: 01-01-25
Wow, what can I say about the power of betrayal. It truly is painful to think that this is not an uncommon occurrence in our world. Relationships in marriage are difficult when one person is not honest and the other person forgives over and over. Where and how does one cut the cord?
Great writing and performance.

Historia
Misty Copeland made history as the first African-American principal ballerina at the American Ballet Theatre. Her talent, passion, and perseverance enabled her to make strides no one had accomplished before. But as she will tell you, achievement never happens in a void. Behind her, supporting her rise was her mentor Raven Wilkinson. Raven had been virtually alone in her quest to breach the all-white ballet world when she fought to be taken seriously as a Black ballerina in the 1950s and 60s.

I enjoyed reading how Misty Copeland overcame personal and professional barriers to grab a hold of success. It takes perseverance to achieve our goals and Misty's story is a powerful reminder.

Historia
Tumors, injuries, ruptured vascular malformations—there is almost no such thing as a non-urgent brain surgery when it comes to kids. For a pediatric neurosurgeon working in the medical minefield of the brain—in which a single millimeter in every direction governs something that makes us essentially human—every day presents the challenge, and the opportunity, to give a new lease on life to a child for whom nothing is yet fully determined and all possibilities still exist.

Historia
This is the story of how a nerdy, homeschooled kid in the church choir named John Stephens became the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling, genre-pushing pop star we know as John Legend. For a long time, he led a double life—excelling as a star student while his home life was in shambles, working in corporate America as a financial consultant while moonlighting as a musician in nightclubs, always straddling a line between the person he was and the person he wanted to be. These are his Words + Music.

Historia
Franny Stone has always been the kind of woman who is able to love but unable to stay. Leaving behind everything but her research gear, she arrives in Greenland with a singular purpose: to follow the last Arctic terns in the world on what might be their final migration to Antarctica. Franny talks her way onto a fishing boat, and she and the crew set sail, traveling ever further from shore and safety. But as Franny’s history begins to unspool - a passionate love affair, an absent family, a devastating crime - it becomes clear that she is chasing more than just the birds.

Understanding Migrations
Revisado: 02-13-22
This is a deep and powerful story of the numerous effects abandonment can have on a child. You really have to read chapters slowly to process what is truly going on beneath the surface.
Strong determination echoed throughout this story. I enjoyed the way the author wound things together at the end!!

Historia
You might ask the obvious question: What do I, a 17-year-old Haitian American from Miami with way too little life experience, have to say about anything? Actually, a lot. Thanks to "the incident" (don’t ask), I’m spending the next two months doing what my school is calling a "spring volunteer immersion project." It’s definitely no vacation. I’m toiling away under the ever-watchful eyes of Tati Estelle at her new nonprofit. And my lean-in queen of a mother is even here to make sure I do things right.

Lively story about Haitian Family
Revisado: 12-23-21
This title is deceiving as it really does not talk much about Haiti but is more about family dynamics. Alaine is pompous and arrogant. Story attempts to weave in Haitian curse but does a poor job.
