Historia
In a different world, Evie Milton would have accepted her fate, married an aristocrat and become the doyenne of one of England’s finest estates, just like her mother. In a different world, Rose Wiley would have married her fiancé, David, established a modest homestead and brought up a brood of babies, just like her mother. But this isn’t a different world, and these women are not their mothers. Rose dreams of a life filled with more than family and duty to her husband—a life of purpose—and Evie dreams of a life far away from her rarefied existence.

Good Book
Revisado: 05-25-22
I liked this book a lot. The story line was good and I liked the characters. IMO the story did drag a bit with too much descriptive narrative. I would defiantly want to listen to more from this author.

Historia
Abandoned at three—whose parents want a kid who sees ghosts?—I learned the world is quick to punish misfits. I try my best to be a normal, boring human, but the call of the supernatural just won't be ignored. When a stranger shows up on my doorstep in the middle of the night, it's no sexy tryst. Instead, I'm off to the graveyard, digging up the corpse of a murder victim at the demand of the local vampire coven—and that small felony is just the start.

I kept thinking it would get better.
Revisado: 05-09-22
I like the idea of the book, but had a difficult time bonding with the heroine. She said one thing but was always doing the opposite. It seams like every other paragraph has some kind of verbal sexual byplay. IMO it got to be a bit much. I'm about half way through the book so it might get better
Edited to add: The sexual byplay turned into some explicit sexual scenes. If that offends you then don't get this book.

I miss Stephanie Daniel narration.
Revisado: 04-17-21
I love all the Phryne books. This book is full of short stories that I have read before and a couple of new short stories. I was hoping for a novel length new story. I could not get use to a new narrator. Stephanie Daniel is Phryne in my mind and this new narrator just didn't have the same panache.

After the sickness known as the Doom destroyed civilization, magick has become commonplace, and Fallon Swift has spent her young years learning its ways. Fallon cannot live in peace until she frees those who have been preyed upon by the government or the fanatical Purity Warriors, endlessly hunted or locked up in laboratories, brutalized for years on end. She is determined to save even those who have been complicit with this evil out of fear or weakness - if, indeed, they can be saved.

Not enough fun
Revisado: 11-30-19
Usually there is a lot of fun in Nora's stories, even in the most gruesome stories, but not this one. Just a lot of doom and gloom. I finished this book but it's not one I'll be reading again.

Unusual that I didn't like this
Revisado: 07-02-19
I have read other Miss Silver mysteries and found them enjoyable but couldn't finish this one. There was just to much female person explaining why she thought a thing was so and male person being oh so reasonable explaining why female was wrong. Will have to return this one. There is always this kind of by play going on in Miss Silver books but this one was exceptionally annoying to me.

Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the characters and how they interacted with each other. The mystery was obvious from early on in the plot. If there is a second book, which there probably will be, I would be willing to spend a credit to listen to it.

Don't expect much
Revisado: 05-29-16
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I don't think Linda Howard wrote this book. It was so not like anything I have read from her
What didn’t you like about Tanya Eby’s performance?
Tanya did the best she could with such a slow moving boring book.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Troublemaker?
Way to much of the plot revolved around the dog. I was really sick of that dog by the third chapter.
Any additional comments?
very very disappointed.

Very slow going
Revisado: 01-06-16
Would you try another book from Elizabeth George and/or Davina Porter?
Not sure if I will try another book by this author. I made it to the end of Part 1 then skipped to the end of part 2 so I could see who did it. I found this book to be very slow going and had a difficult time differentiating the various characters.
Would you ever listen to anything by Elizabeth George again?
Not sure if I will listen to another book by George?
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Davina Porter?
I liked the narrator's voice but for me the voices of the different characters was not clear enough for me to make out who was who. Perhaps the problem was there are so many characters that finding voices for all of them would be impossible for any narrator.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I really liked the plot of this book and kept trying to plod along with it but just couldn't manage. Skipped to the end to see who did it.

Historia
With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestors’ blood and magic have flowed through generations - and where her destiny awaits. Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses.

Revisado: 11-03-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
I did not like the narrator at all. It ruined the story for me. The narrator was over the top annoying. Way to much breathiness (probably not a word?).
Maybe if I read the book instead of listening to it I will change my mind?
Any additional comments?
Listening to this book I kept wondering if some other author wrote it. I could not connect with the characters so didn't much care what happened to them.

Historia
When acclaimed Washington Post writer Wil Haygood had an early hunch that Obama would win the 2008 election, he thought he'd highlight the singular moment by exploring the life of someone who had come of age when segregation was so embedded in the culture as to make the very thought of a black president inconceivable. He struck gold when he tracked down Eugene Allen, a butler who had served eight presidents, from Harry Truman to Ronald Reagan. Forest Whitaker narrates the story of this remarkable man who, while serving tea and supervising buffets, was also a witness to history.

It was OK but not what I expected
Revisado: 08-01-13
Would you recommend The Butler to your friends? Why or why not?
I am not sure? I bought the book because I thought I would hear what the butler thought about the different presidents he served under or maybe his take on different events that happened while he was a butler, but that isn't what the book is about. The book is more of a narrative on Africa American history in the United States than about the white house.
Any additional comments?
I feel as if this book was an expensive advertisement to get people to go see the film and it worked because I want to see the movie.
