Stick to YA, Maas
Revisado: 11-27-21
I tried to finish it. I kept hoping I'd find something redeeming. I kept making excuses for it. However, I finally figured out why I didn't like it.
Sarah J. Maas is a writer of YA fiction. This is her attempting to write an "adult" novel. The issue: she doesn't know how. These characters are YA style characters in "adult" situations. That's it. That's all she did to write an "adult" novel. She aged them into being "adults" giving them license to use profanity in every sentence and do "adult" things, but they think and react to these "adult" situations like YA characters.
I don't dislike YA. This might've made a decent YA novel if it could've been censored back a few notches. Instead, it's a poorly written, immature attempt at not writing YA fiction.

Historia
"The Eye of Osiris" (1911) is a novel by R. Austin Freeman. Dr. John Thorndyke, a medical jurispractitioner bases his solutions on his method of collecting all possible data (including dust and pond weed) and making inferences from them before looking at any of the protagonists and motives in the crimes. It is this method which gave rise to one of Freeman's most ingenious inventions, the inverted detective story, where the criminal act is described first and the interest lies in Thorndyke's subsequent unraveling of it.

I listened nearly two hours. I really tried to like it, but this narrator is so terrible and that trumped me wanting to like the story. I would love to see this and more of Freeman's work with better narration.

I had zero idea of what I was in for with this book beyond the brief description. It's very well written and the performances are spot on. I'm most definitely getting the next in the series as soon possible.

Revisado: 09-04-19
I love this look into a multiverse where the most random possibilities (and pop culture references) become reality. And where anything can happen, of course, the insurance agents have a policy for that.
Adam Baldwin was a perfect choice! And if you don't like him, he's the POTUS and there's nothing you can do about it.

In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Almost perfect...but definitely NOT "definitive"
Revisado: 12-11-18
This is a splendid collection of almost the definitive complete works of Sherlock Holmes.
Stephen Fry was BRILLIANT (truly 5 stars)!! I had previously listened to the complete works narrated by Simon Vance. At that time, I didn't see how any other single collection could rival that one. The answer, for me, is Stephen Fry is every bit as good as Simon Vance (and Derek Jacobi). In fact, my favorite part of this collection is Fry's introductions - his mini essays on Holmes, Doyle, and the enduring legacy.
The only bad part of this collection is simply that it is NOT the "definitive" complete collection that it's billed to be (note my overall 3 stars). It's completely missing The Case Book of Sherlock Holmes. That alone make the Vance collection superior. The Jacobi collection is also very good, but it's not one complete collection - it's sold individually per volume - thus making it much more expensive.
I hope the Case Book is added to my purchase at some point or made available separately.
You will LOVE Stephen Fry if you listen to this collection. You just will.

Historia
Internationally best-selling author Lyndsay Faye became enamored with tales of Sherlock Holmes and his esteemed biographer, Dr. John Watson, as a child and later began spinning these quintessential characters into her own works of fiction - from her acclaimed debut novel, Dust and Shadow, which pitted the famous detective against Jack the Ripper, to a series of short stories for the Strand Magazine, whose predecessor published the very first Sherlock Holmes short story in 1891.

Best non-Doyle Holmes
Revisado: 11-13-18
This author comes closest to Sir Arthur's Holmes. It felt like it belonged as the next anthology in the series to follow "The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes." Even the title "The Whole Art of Detection" is a reference to Holmes' planned self-written textbook on criminal deduction from the series. I can offer no higher praise.
If that wasn't enough - Simon Vance!! Simon Vance IS Holmes...period. Enjoy his narration of The Complete Sherlock Holmes and then download this collection.
