Historia
Bill Bryson and his family live in a Victorian parsonage in a part of England where nothing of any great significance has happened since the Romans decamped. Yet one day, he began to consider how very little he knew about the ordinary things of life as he found it in that comfortable home. To remedy this, he formed the idea of journeying about his house from room to room to “write a history of the world without leaving home.”

Historia
How did the son of a decorated policeman grow up to be one of Boston's most notorious criminals? How did he survive a decades-long feud with the FBI? How did he escape one jail sentence with a fake gun carved out of soap? How did he trade the return of a famous Rembrandt for early release from another sentence? The Art of the Heist is a roller-coaster ride of a life, the memoir of America's most infamous art thief Myles Connor.

Memoirs? Not so sure...
Revisado: 10-04-22
Presented as a telling of true events, this book is more like a script for a heist movie. It is complete with extensive dialogue between criminals and Court proceedings. Miles Connor comes off as an unrepentant thief who seems surprised he ended up the way he did.
The over inflated rhetoric of Mile's Connor's accounts of his criminal misdeeds is not helped by the ultra dramatic reading of the narrator. In trying to emphasize the drama in certain parts of the story, the narrator only enhanced the stink of BS.
I confess I was drawn in by what I had heard of this musician / art thief. But instead of an interesting story of a cultured thief and Boston rocker, this reads as just another criminal story. But with the added unsavory twist that he considers himself such a stand-up guy....and he's OK with the outcome of everything... including the never returned items from the Gardener heist.
probably best enjoyed by someone familiar with Boston and the crime scene in the '70s and '80s.

Historia
My real story starts with a disaster, an unmitigated, pull-the-rug-from-under-you, clean-out-the-bank-account disaster. But had it not happened, The Police would never have risen to become the biggest rock band in the world; Jools Holland would not have ended up on TV; The Bangles, The Go-Go’s, R.E.M., and many other music stars might never have made it either. It’s strange how a fluke, a disaster, an unlikely event can lead to incredible results. But that is in essence what happened to me....

great memoir...but the narrator....
Revisado: 09-26-22
this was one of the most engaging, funny and wide ranging exposes of the post punk period...and onward... in music that I have ever read.
My only beef is that Miles should have been directed/produced better. It is ironic actually. The narration, at times, sounds like he doesn't even know what he wrote. Somebody should have been in his ear saying "maybe do that line again."
But other than that, fans of the Police, Squeeze, The Go Gos, and myriad other name brand bands will eat this up. A fantastic audiobook for the music lover.

Historia
Born just outside London in 1942, Glyn Johns was 16 years old at the dawn of rock and roll. His big break as a producer came on the Steve Miller Band's debut album, Children of the Future. He went on to engineer or produce iconic albums for the best in the business, including Abbey Road with the Beatles. Even more impressive, Johns was perhaps the only person on a given day in the studio who was entirely sober, and so he is one of the most reliable and clear-eyed insiders to tell these stories today.

Lacks drama
Revisado: 10-05-18
a very comprehensive tome of evil insanity. however I felt the narration could have had more life to it. No pun intended. Also with such a comprehensive list, the Killers go by in a mind-numbing blur. at times it is like a laundry list. But very well-researched and covers every aspect you can think of regarding serial killers.

Historia
When Lewis Barnavelt, an orphan, comes to stay with his Uncle Jonathan, he expects to meet an ordinary person. But he is wrong. Uncle Jonathan and his next-door neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann, are both witches! Lewis is thrilled. At first, watching magic is enough. Then Lewis experiments with magic himself and unknowingly resurrects the former owner of the house: a woman named Serenna Izard. It seems that Serenna and her husband built a timepiece into the walls - a clock that could obliterate humankind. And only the Barnavelts can stop it!

wonderful tale of magic
Revisado: 04-26-18
I just reread this book from my adolescent years. It was as delightful and charming all these years later as it was when I was young. masterfully narrated, It's a wonderful story that young people can relate to. And just enough spooky Intrigue to keep readers of all ages wondering what will happen. Highly recommended.

Historia
In 2011, a 26-year-old libertarian programmer named Ross Ulbricht launched the ultimate free market: the Silk Road, a clandestine website hosted on the Dark Web where anyone could trade anything - drugs, hacking software, forged passports, counterfeit cash, poisons - free of the government's watchful eye. It wasn't long before the media got wind of the new website where anyone - not just teenagers and weed dealers but terrorists and black hat hackers - could buy and sell contraband detection-free.

unfulfilled potential
Revisado: 04-19-18
This story had amazing potential but left me somewhat non-plussed. Bilton's narrative style never seems to get deep enough with these intriguing characters. I was left conjecturing how this book would have gone in the hands of Tom Wolfe or someone of his ilk in the nonfiction world. It would have been nice to know more about the agents work, crooked or otherwise. However, what I found the most frustrating, was the inadequate background of Bitcoin and how the drug money was laundered and converted to real cash. Overall, Kingpin is not a bad book, but as the subject line reflects, it did not reach its full potential for this reader.

Not bad but not great
Revisado: 02-09-18
A lot of Dan Brown's stock narrative methods are in place here. Unfortunately, what was new and fascinating in The DaVinci Code, has become hackneyed in this effort.
Much like Angels and Demons, DaVinci Code and The Lost Symbol, this effort is heavy in minutiae about art, religion and technology. There's the usual nefarious religious plot as well as a homicidal zealot on a mission. The characters are reminiscent of characters in his other books.
Once again, we are along for the ride as Robert Langdon tries to put together disjointed clues and drive the action to save the world. There's a lot of running from the good guys and the bad guys, romantic innuendo with his female companion and the pre requisite mention of Langdon's penchant for swimming at Harvard. There are a few unexpected twists, but the end result is a book that lacks punch.
The narrator, Paul Michael, was good, but he's not enough to save this book. This is not one of Brown's best, but not totally terrible either. Dan just needs to tighten up a bit and come up with some new narrative methods.
