The story of Lilith, born into slavery on a Jamaican sugar plantation at the end of the 18th century. Even at her birth, the slave women around her recognize a dark power that they - and she - will come to both revere and fear. The Night Women, as they call themselves, have long been plotting a slave revolt, and as Lilith comes of age and reveals the extent of her power, they see her as the key to their plans.

Superb

This may be the most powerful book I've ever read or listened to. Kudos to Mr. James.
The violence was revolting, but, given that it is a book about slavery, that's the point.

Disappointing; hard to believe that Adrian McKinty wrote this
Revisado: 06-18-24
The premise of "the chain" was thought-provoking and kept me listening to the end. However, the story's execution was sub-par; it could have been complied by ChatGPT as an amalgamation of dozens of other mediocre thrillers. I actually looked more than once at the title details to confirm that it wasn't written by someone else. The characters are waffling and the plot veers into unreality at the end. If you are a McKinty fan, I recommend skipping this one. If you just want a few hours of diversion (probably would be good for a long drive), this may fit the bill.

Historia
Hendrik Groen may be old, but he is far from dead and isn't planning to be buried any time soon. Granted, his daily strolls are getting shorter because his legs are no longer willing, and he has to visit his doctor more than he'd like. Technically speaking he is...elderly. But surely there is more to life at his age than weak tea and potted geraniums? Hendrik sets out to write an exposé: a year in the life of his care home in Amsterdam, revealing all its ups and downs.

Volume issue
Revisado: 11-29-22
The narrator does an excellent job of portraying Henrik, BUT within most sentences, the volume of his voice goes from a whisper to a loud ardent statement. Thus, there is no good volume setting with which to listen. The subdued speech gets lost if there is ANY background noise. I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks; this is the first that I gave up on because of narration volume. If you can't listen in a quiet place, the book would be better read.

Had to bail
Revisado: 06-25-22
The premise is intellectually interesting (if you are into the tech of sci-fi, this might be for you), but after a few hours I wasn't really listening. This didn't meet 2 criteria for a good book: I didn't think about the book when I wasn't listening and I didn't care enough to rewind to catch something I missed. Inherent in what the characters are, is the inability of the listener/reader to form any emotional attachment. I don't regret the time I spent listening, but won't put in another 6 hours.

Historia
This is the story of Skip Sands—spy-in-training, engaged in Psychological Operations against the Vietcong—and the disasters that befall him thanks to his famous uncle, a war hero known in intelligence circles simply as the Colonel. This is also the story of the Houston brothers, Bill and James, young men who drift out of the Arizona desert into a war in which the line between disinformation and delusion has blurred away. In its vision of human folly, and its gritty, sympathetic portraits of men and women desperate for an end to their loneliness.

In the negative camp on this one
Revisado: 01-19-19
Until now, I thought I could listen to Will Patton read anything, for any length of time. But even his charismatic drawl feels like fingernails on a chalkboard after listening for 23 hours to a cast of entirely dispirited and/or malign characters. The author's writing style and storytelling ability are great, it's just too bad there isn't really a story here. The characters don't evolve or accomplish anything and, like the war, are unredeemed at the end. Same goes for the listener/reader, at least in my case, unfortunately.

I don't get it (you shouldn't either)
Revisado: 03-26-18
Fortunately, I only paid 4.95$ for this. I am still tempted to return it, because I don't think anyone should profit from such bad writing. I listened to the entire book, with a lot of eye rolling and disbelief, to see if there was any redeeming value. There isn't. I can save you money and just sum up the book: young gangster drug dealer makes good + lots of dreadful (pun intended) sex + name-dropping of status-symbol luxury brands (as if being able to afford these equates to goodness). The characters and dialogue are so stereotypical that I initially thought this was satire. Even with my apparently puritanical upbringing, I am pretty sure that heroin isn't called "heroin" on the streets and I don't think a lucrative drug-dealing business is just casually given to a 17 year old. I will give the author credit for the female character BG, who puts business above sex (it's a low bar), but that is negated by the "God" character, who had so much potential for intrigue, but turns out to be just another dirty old man.

Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

just barely good enough to finish
Revisado: 12-03-17
Interesting narrative presentation, but annoying after the first 30 minutes. It would probably be a better read, as all of the references (including the obsits and ibids), which are spoken in the audiobook, could be skimmed. A few thought-provoking ideas relating the impact of Lincoln's son's death to his commander-in- chief role are vaguely raised. It felt as if this were written for live theater.

Revisado: 03-10-17
I made it through 7 hours, but had to bag it. I felt as if I were in a young adult's head as he planned out, in detail, this fantasy world, then plopped characters into it and made them walk around. The characters have stories behind them, but are otherwise undeveloped. Unlike some fantasies, I felt like I was looking in, but never involved. To be honest, I felt the same way about The Lord of the Rings (heresy!!!), so if you liked that trilogy, you would probably like this.

Historia
Faith, I tell them, is a mystery, elusive to many, and never easy to explain. Sweeping and lyrical, spellbinding and unforgettable, David Ebershoff’s The 19th Wife combines epic historical fiction with a modern murder mystery to create a brilliant novel of literary suspense. It is 1875, and Ann Eliza Young has recently separated from her powerful husband, Brigham Young, prophet and leader of the Mormon Church. Expelled and an outcast, Ann Eliza embarks on a crusade to end polygamy in the United States.

eye opening
Revisado: 10-30-16
This was on my wish list for years because I really had no interest in polygamy and Mormonism, no matter how well written, and could always find something else on which to spend my credits. I am amazed at how fascinating I found this book, as I have a strong aversion to anything dealing with religion and to any sort of proselytizing. This was engaging and thought-provoking. There are two concurrent stories which deal with polygamy among the early Mormons and with a current day sect still practicing polygamy. It objectively gives a history of polygamy and why it was abolished, particularly its effects on the children involved.
Although it is a novel, one storyline reads as factual and the other as fiction. I highly recommend it.
