Historia
A New York Times Top 10 Book of the Year and National Book Award finalist, Pachinko is an "extraordinary epic" of four generations of a poor Korean immigrant family as they fight to control their destiny in 20th-century Japan (San Francisco Chronicle). In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

Every little life has a story
Revisado: 06-03-23
I loved this book and the layers of struggle striving and joy. Sometimes devastating other times quaint its astory of the ups and downs of life and the life lessons past through generations. Loved it, think a different title would suit it though

Historia
Thirty years ago, award-winning journalist Jon Ronson stumbled on the mystery of Carol Howe—a charismatic, wealthy former debutante turned white supremacist spokeswoman turned undercover informant. In 1995, Carol was spying on Oklahoma’s neo-Nazis for the government just when Timothy McVeigh blew up a federal building in Oklahoma City, killing 168 people.

disappointed all around
Revisado: 05-19-23
typically I find Jon’s reporting to be thought provoking and thorough, this “series” was neither. It was as if he found himself deep in the reporting with out an ending but he decided to just end the podcast anyway. There is no “point” or thesis just a lot of reporting that goes…nowhere? I’m really surprised he released this!

Historia
In 1637, one Dutchman paid as much for a single tulip bulb as the going price of a town house in Amsterdam. Three and a half centuries later, Amsterdam is once again the mecca for people who care passionately about one particular plant—though this time the obsessions revolves around the intoxicating effects of marijuana rather than the visual beauty of the tulip. How could flowers, of all things, become such objects of desire that they can drive men to financial ruin?

Hard to define why I don’t like this book
Revisado: 11-29-22
I really wanted to like this book! I’m not sure if its the narrator, the pace of the “story” or the flimsy use of “facts” but I keep turning it off, irritated. I think the premise of the book outline in the introduction is interesting but unfortunately that’s the last intriguing thing I’ve found. It might be that I already knew too much about apples, so I skipped the end of that chapter. But I know almost nothing about tulips and still can’t bear to listen. It could be the chirpy tone of the narrator recounting his charming childhood…I don’t know. I’m sure this book has an audience but it seems it is not me.

Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. It's a skill that allows you to quickly master complicated information and produce better results in less time. Deep Work will make you better at what you do and provide the sense of true fulfillment that comes from craftsmanship.

fact checking
Revisado: 05-03-22
Malcolm Gladwell does use Twitter…I know it’s a little thing but once there’s a wrong fact in a book you start to question everything the author says. Overall I like the book it is very easy to navigate and has actionable items to make use of the author’s research (even if he didn’t fact check all of that research….)
Performance is OK, it’s a little like listening to an announcer you might hear in a theater “the show is about to begin,” or “we thank you for refraining to use flash photography during this presentation” for five hours, but not annoying or hard to understand

Interesting! with some bumps in the road
Revisado: 03-22-22
Oddly I felt that listening at 1.4+ speed helped the narration immensely!!
There are some interesting stories here but almost no original reporting. Most info is lifted from the books/biographies of other authors.
The parts about the author herself lack a little reflection, she talks about her creativity as a reason for success but each story about her building her business is based in having a helpful connection goop/banksy/her first sale to a collector in Paris.
I don’t see the connection between creativity and success but rather it makes me feel I need to grow my network (which is also good advice!)
If you’re interested in learning about important artists there is definitely good info here

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

You don’t have to agree with all of this to enjoy the book. Great perspective, great reading voice, interesting story (I listened at 1.25 speed and it was perfect!)
