Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

One of Erdrich’s best
Revisado: 10-13-24
I liked the complex characters trying to live within the culture of agriculture while an urban environment puts pressure on a way of life.

Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Verguese Just gets better.
Revisado: 05-28-23
I appreciated the merging of history, medicine and cultural life of locals and immigrants in southern India’s Christian region. Development of characters, their flaws and resulting choices is masterful. I learned so much while identifying with some of life’s challenges. Easy to follow Verguese’s storytelling. Covenant of Water is even better than Cutting for Stone.

Historia
A landslide has closed the Korowai Pass on New Zealand’s South Island, cutting off the town of Thorndike and leaving a sizable farm abandoned. The disaster presents an opportunity for Birnam Wood, an undeclared, unregulated, sometimes-criminal, sometimes-philanthropic guerrilla gardening collective that plants crops wherever no one will notice. For years, the group has struggled to break even. To occupy the farm at Thorndike would mean a shot at solvency at last. But the enigmatic American billionaire Robert Lemoine also has an interest in the place.

Exquisite storytelling.
Revisado: 05-13-23
The author handles levels of story without confusing me. She clearly develops each character’s motivation so all of their vulnerabilities and choices make perfect sense. I am stunned by her story and writing ability. Thank you, Eleanor.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Long and worth every word.
Revisado: 11-06-22
This author is my favorite. I wondered about the length, but remembered how satisfied I was with La Lacuna. This novel held my attention right through. Kingsolver delivers some bleak characters but always gives them a saving grace. Good and evil reside together. The novel is a balancing act with a last line that encapsulates the story. But don’t you dare read it first.

Real Life at the End
Revisado: 09-06-22
This was the best literary fiction I have read in months. I laughed and I cried as the 17 year old Lennie and 83 year old Margot share end of life stories. The author managed the structure well, moving in time to develop character and follow subtle plot line. Live and learn with no regrets.

A glimpse into Ojibwe culture
Revisado: 10-19-17
I read all of Louise Erdrich’s books. She winds well-crafted storytelling, characterization and changing values of her First Nation people into seemingly effortless writing. I appreciate delving into the character’s background and heritage as a way gaining the reader’s appreciation of negative behaviors and traits. This technique encourages me to allow the characters to live within the book against stereotype.
The reading by Erdrich adds to the authentic reflection of the story. I am pleased that Erdrich continues to write As a non- indigenous reader, I continue to learn about our First Peoples.

Unbelievable at that time in at the same history.
Revisado: 02-14-13
A fan of historic naval history I found this very dissappointing. D.R. is becoming a bit repetitive in his plots: Flawed naval officer+girl+internal struggles+the odd child= "same old, same old". I find if I leave a few months before his books they are quite enjoyable. Not this time.
Narrator did a great job as usual.

It is the most famous military installation in the world. And it doesn't exist. Located a mere s75 miles outside of Las Vegas in Nevada's desert, the base has never been acknowledged by the US government - but Area 51 has captivated imaginations for decades. Annie Jacobsen had exclusive access to 19 men who served the base proudly and secretly for decades and are now aged 75-92, and unprecedented access to 55 additional military and intelligence personnel, scientists, pilots, and engineers linked to the secret base, 32 of whom lived and worked there for extended periods.

Disappointing and beyond belief.
Revisado: 12-13-04
It is not often that I want to fast-forward whilst listening, but I certainbly did with this. The plot is beyond belief. Details of the size of ammunition and far too many descriptions of the results of coming in contact with it are boring. A very disappointing publication.
