vague and outdated
Revisado: 09-23-24
Wwhile there are a number of examples in this book that are provided as evidence for the premise of his argument and examples of successful and unsuccessful startups, a significant portion of them have been proven to be incorrect in the years between the book's authorship and now. statements like "there has been little technological progress since the 1970s" comes across as ridiculous in the light of the internet, 3D printing, ai, smartphones, electric self-driving vehicles, the list goes on. this makes it difficult to trust the purported wisdom in the rest of the book.
additionally, though there is some guidelines provided on weather or not to start a startup, there is fairly little guidance on how to make a existing startup successful. in the lingo of the author, there is a excellent argument made as for the need to go from 0 to 1:00, but little help on how to get to 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, etc. perhaps I am looking for too much from a short book though.
the narration was excellent, no critiques there

Historia
Sleep is one of the most important but least understood aspects of our life, wellness, and longevity. Until very recently, science had no answer to the question of why we sleep, or what good it served, or why we suffer such devastating health consequences when we don't sleep. Compared to the other basic drives in life - eating, drinking, and reproducing - the purpose of sleep remained elusive.

Enlightening and terrifying
Revisado: 07-06-21
It is hard to believe just how important sleep is for so many things. It makes one wonder how different their own life would be, and how different society would be, if sleeping were improved.

Good book, poor narration
Revisado: 04-21-21
The book is good, but the narrator clearly doesn't know how to pronounce Japanese words. Most names, including those of two of the main characters are mispronounced, and it is quite jarring each time it happens. It seems like they could have easily hired a narrator that had at least a basic understanding of Japanese pronunciation considering the book was translated from Japanese, set in Japan, and features only Japanese characters.

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Unrealistic and kind of boring
Revisado: 03-01-21
I had high expectations for the book given its reputation and status as a classic, but it was a let down in my opinion. The first third of the book was a struggle to even pay attention to, although it managed to create the setting. The middle third at least introduced a couple characters who were not 2 dimensional, and was actually enjoyable. The final third was just grotesque and unrealistic.
The book can largely be summarized by it's setting. Actual characters and events are only there to reinforce the setting. The story is therefore inconsequential. The setting itself is decent, but not terribly believable. It is inconceivable that the entire world, or even a third of it, could devolve to such a state. Certainly external events could (and have) occur that would create a totalitarian society, but it is absurd to think that there would be prolonged and complete support for such a society within the minds of its members. Any such society would cripple itself in terms of progress, and within years or decades either collapse internally due to a pathetic economy, or would be defeated in the never ending wars with any country that had not so crippled itself.
A surveillance state as described is perfectly feasible. However, in the absence of AI it's absurd to think they could actually monitor people to such an extent. To develop AI of the practically mind reading capabilities the thought police have would be impossible in the society pictured.
Newspeak is an interesting concept and the audio performance was excellent though.
