Distracting narration
Revisado: 04-21-25
The narrator’s affection was extremely distracting. The previous narrator was also distracting. There is a lilting manor to the pronunciation of the words that grates on the nerves. I don’t think I can continue listening to this series.

Historia
With the epic victory at Waterloo behind them, Arianna and Saybrook are looking forward to a quiet summer of scholarship, far from the turmoil of war and politics. But little do they know that an even more dangerous battle is about to test their mettle. The shocking news that Lord Grentham, the steely minister of state security, has been accused of treason and is on the run from arrest takes them and their close circle of friends by surprise. Arianna and Saybrook don't want to believe it. Despite their fraught past with the minister, they've developed a grudging friendship.

Horrid Narration
Revisado: 02-13-21
While the storyline and characters are compelling, the narration style is affected and distracting. I had to listen to it at 1.3X speed just to get through it. If this narrator is used for the next installment, I will have to opt for reading that one the old fashioned way.

Not as good as Bossy Pants
Revisado: 06-10-15
I am sure she would hates being constantly compared to Tina Fey but I can't help it. There really isn't enough substance to this to be considered a book. However, she plainly says that in the intro so if you buy it, you are getting what you pay for.

Historia
No woman in the Gilded Age made as much money as Hetty Green. At the time of her death in 1916, she was worth at least 100 million dollars, equal to more than 2 billion dollars today. A strong believer in women being financially independent, she offered valuable lessons for the present times. Abandoned at birth by her neurotic mother, scorned by her misogynist father, Hetty set out as a child to prove her value. Following the simple rules of her wealthy Quaker father, she successfully invested her money and along the way proved to herself that she was wealthy and therefore worthy.

I was very interested in the subject matter, however, the narrators affected voice almost made me stop listening. If you can get past that voice the story is interesting.

Historia
The Great Recession has shuffled Clay Jannon out of his life as a San Francisco Web-design drone - and serendipity, sheer curiosity, and the ability to climb a ladder like a monkey has landed him a new gig working the night shift at Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore. But after just a few days on the job, Clay begins to realize that this store is even more curious than the name suggests. There are only a few customers, but they come in repeatedly and never seem to actually buy anything....

A quick light read perfect for a lazy summer weekend.
The story is interesting enough to keep you reading, although the pay-off is a bit underwhelming.

Historia
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

Where does The Girls of Atomic City rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Living in a city that doesn't appear on maps.
Working a job that if you ask too many questions about could get you fired.
Suspecting everyone around you of being a trader or informer.
This statements sound like something from North Korea or the darkest days of the cold war Soviet Union. But they are not. They are from this country in the middle of the last century, during the race to build the atomic bomb.
Absolutely worth the read.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

If you could sum up The Nightingale in three words, what would they be?
Highly recommend.
This view of life in Nazi occupied France was not often told, but absolutely worth exploring. The tale of personal sacrifice and heroism is gripping. The themes of how long-held family perceptions can color our judgements transcend this story.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Good but not great
Revisado: 06-10-15
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would mildly recommend.
The story had promise but the primary focus on just one rower, didn't pay off the authors opening statement about telling the story of the "boat". The focus on the Nazi preparations for the 1936 Olympics were not necessary and distracted from the main story telling.

Historia
Helene Wecker's dazzling debut novel tells the story of two supernatural creatures who appear mysteriously in 1899 New York. Chava is a golem, a creature made of clay, brought to life by a strange man who dabbles in dark Kabbalistic magic. When her master dies at sea on the voyage from Poland, she is unmoored and adrift as the ship arrives in New York Harbor. Ahmad is a jinni, a being of fire, born in the ancient Syrian Desert. Trapped in an old copper flask by a Bedouin wizard centuries ago, he is released accidentally by a tinsmith in a Lower Manhattan shop.
