Worth your time; excellent discussion about coming to terms — appreciating one of the most talented musical artists of all time but recognizing all people are complex and have good and bad in them.

Historia
G. Eric Kuskey, former colleague of Thomas Kinkade and close friend until the artist's death in 2012, tells Kinkade's story for the first time, from his art's humble beginnings on a sidewalk in Carmel, California, to his five-house compound in Monte Sereno. It's a tale of addiction and grief, of losing control, and ultimately, of the price of our dreams.

Fascinating and balanced
Revisado: 12-26-22
I admit I downloaded this book with less than generous intentions, coming from a formal art education. The author was a close friend for many years to Thomas Kinkade, and presented both a loving and balanced view of his life and behaviors. I also came away with a better understanding, and more respect for the artwork, which I also admit, would have described as schlocky in the past. The book gave me a lot to think about and I appreciated other views of what Art is all about.

Midnight in the Garden of Eden "lite"
Revisado: 09-17-22
I hesitated to write a review. I had been speaking to a friend of mine about how this book was frustrating me because of it's positive reviews but my feeling over and over again of how characterizations in this story didn't ring true. My friend looked the book up on Amazon and let me know how the author had responded to some of the negative reviews and I thought "I don't want a part of that". But I decided to come back and write my review.
I think if you don't have any experience with any kind of alternative sex or gender community, this book could be really misleading. I hate to think anyone who is straight would read this and think that cross dressers, drag queens, BDSM practitioners speak like this, act like this or might use this as a basis for any sort of opinion they might have for any of these folks. I am speaking primarily of the peripheral characters, but I will add in the criminals as well, despite the fact that they are not sympathetic.
It's taken me a while to write this, because David Sedaris is also a gay man who writes about people in his life. He also exaggerates to make a good story, of course. But despite that, I never get the feeling he is lying or mischaracterizing an entire group of people. His writing comes across about quirky individuals, but this book comes across as quirky groups of people, somehow. I'd hate to think anyone would read this and paint anyone odd in the world with the brushes that are used to paint the characters, in their real lives.
For the beats of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, you can find beats in this book; but they're so shallow in comparison. I was about to write the dialogue was unbelievable at times, but maybe it's the narrator's presentation? I really don't think so, I think it's the book itself.
Anyway, if you're a fan of Midnight, proceed with caution. I'm apparently in the minority here but it just seemed so transparent that this author found a crime in Louisville and then did a play by play of Midnight based on that. Which I'm all for this genre increasing, but it needs to be as well done as Midnight. But again, I'm in the minority, so you may really enjoy this. A lot of people did!

This chilling book also features actual supernatural evidence - from EVPs and psychic confirmations to first-hand accounts of the disembodied hands and voices that regularly manifest on the estate.

Ghost Hunters move into Fox Hollow Farm
Revisado: 09-17-22
I'm sure I'm not the only review to point out; this is a misleading title. If you enjoy the Ghost Hunter-type TV shows, this will be your thing. But if you're looking for the introspective and detailed story of the famous Fox Hollow crimes, you won't find it here. The author claims to be agnostic, but they seem to be going along with a lot of the woo woo with the ghost hunter type folk are introducing here. As you can tell from that last sentence, I'm not a fan of the Ghost Hunter shows. But if you are, and you are a believer, this will totally be your thing!

In 2015, Mary Yoder returned home from the chiropractic center that she operated with her husband, Bill, complaining that she felt unwell. Mary, health-conscious and vibrant, was suddenly vomiting, sweating, and weak. Doctors in the ER and ICU were baffled as to the cause of her rapidly progressing illness. Her loved ones - including Bill and their children, Adam, Tamryn, and Liana - gathered in shock to say good-bye. In the weeks that followed Mary's death, the grief-stricken family received startling news from the medical examiner: Mary had been deliberately poisoned with colchicine.

Worth a true crime credit :)
Revisado: 01-23-22
I love true crime stories that reveal a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” and this one hits the target. Good pacing, listened to the whole thing in 24 hours! I didn’t love or hate the narrator. Listen to a sample to see if something that will bother you; as is the case with some of the other reviewers.

2nd fiction book better than her first
Revisado: 05-04-14
This, like her first fictional book, is for fans of her earlier work. I'm not sure how into this I would be if this was the first Jen L book I downloaded, but now that I see the fictional world she's starting to develop - with Diva - a character I'm really starting to have a fondness for - I think the potential for her fiction is growing. This book has a more creative premise this time around. Also, there are a bunch of Jen L in-jokes that will be lost on you if you haven't read her memoirs.
The quality of her voice seems better on this; in "Here we Go Again", it's as if her voice has lowered an octave.
This is definitely light reading or listening, something for the beach, and definitely chick lit.

For die hard Jen fans
Revisado: 05-04-14
I got this despite some negative reviews since this is Jen L's first foray into fiction (I believe). I confess, it is kind of rough for her first effort, but if you like Jen's memoir's there may be enough to reel you in here. The story has been done before, but this is her take on it, which is fine.
I disagree with those saying she shouldn't read her own books. I enjoy Jen's voice and cadence.
It's sort of like C to C+ level Jen. Don't let this be the first Jen book you read, but if you are a fan you'll enjoy it.

Historia
Once every year, Scoutmaster Tim Riggs leads a troop of boys into the Canadian wilderness for a weekend camping trip - a tradition as comforting and reliable as a good ghost story around a roaring bonfre. The boys are a tight-knit crew. There’s Kent, one of the most popular kids in school; Ephraim and Max, also well-liked and easygoing; then there’s Newt the nerd and Shelley the odd duck. For the most part, they all get along and are happy to be there - which makes Scoutmaster Tim’s job a little easier.

Agreed. This is scary stuff!
Revisado: 05-04-14
Wanted to confirm that this really is an excellent choice in the horror genre. I love horror movies and books, and I had to take a couple breaks from this to something a bit more lighthearted every few hours' worth of listen. Some of the descriptions and the scenes thought up here are really quite graphic and hit on a lot of dark fears. A bit slower in the middle, but worth hanging in there. Have something fun and comedic to listen to right afterwards. Recommended!
