great narrator
Revisado: 08-12-24
this was my least favorite of the series. there was almost zero action and the whole story was extremely tedious. great narration as always which is the main reason I keep sticking with this series but I need to take a break after this one.

Historia
They were the closest of sisters and the best of friends. But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered. Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called "Lillibet". And bow to her wishes. Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister's antics with a kind of stoical amusement, but Margaret's struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system - and her fraught relationship with its expectations - was often a source of tension.

one of the best

despite a rather strange narrator, this is an excellent book about the sisters, nothing really new but full of perennially fascinating details for anyone who enjoys a good dish about the Windsors. purely personal and full of gossip without being petty or tacky like some.

Historia
On a beautiful spring day, Julia Harburn sat on a seat in Kensington Gardens enjoying the sunshine. She was wearing a white frock and a large straw hat with a sapphire-blue ribbon which exactly matched her eyes - a strange coincidence, as it turned out, for the blue sapphire was to have a far-reaching influence upon her life. So far, her life had been somewhat dull and circumscribed; but quite suddenly her horizons were enlarged. She began to make new friends.

my favorite d e stevenson book
Revisado: 10-14-20
i have read and cherished her books for over 50 years. this is a very good audible version of blue sapphire. this book will give you comfort and entertainment no matter your situation or mood, if you love a good English story. for those who criticize it, for being outdated or slow, whatever that means, you are simply not worthy and you just don't get it. if you have not discovered d e stevenson, she is a wonderful gift to a certain type of reader.

This biography of Victoria highlights the many dramas of her life. For example, she was fatherless at eight months and treated poorly by her family, but survived to become the only English queen comparable to Elizabeth I. The character of Victoria herself, stubborn and vital, is also drawn out.

not the best victoria
Revisado: 09-06-20
I think I can truthfully say that I have read every available book about Queen Victoria and every single one of her family members. The forward to this book promises that this is going to be the real definitive story of her life. my take on the book is that it is in fact far from fulfilling this promise
I have to say that to me it seemed like many nuances of well know incidences in the story were flattened down. for example the banishment of Victoria's long time governess Lietzen and the battle over the nursery were not mentioned in much detail. On the other hand there were details about Leitzen's attempts for example to control the funds from the duchy of Cornwall which i had not seen mentioned before so although it's it's true that there was an extreme close up on many details of certain events, the psychological aspects are missing which is what I would expect in a "personal" approach to her life.
In fact if this book had not been presented as a truly personal look at Victoria's life, I wouldn't be making this criticism necessarily, I would just think it was sort of a second rate book that had some parts that were of interest but I resent being led by the nose into thinking I'm going to get to read some in depth or at least interesting thinking about her and then finding a recitation of facts and events lacking much analysis.
Also I really don't need any more discussion of the politics of the era and I don't read historical biographies particularly about the Royal family for that aspect so in a way I felt slightly bamboozled by the description of this book
the narration was excellent

Historia
Will the last Beverley daughter marry for Mannerling?
Lizzie is the sixth and youngest daughter of the late Sir Beverley, the patriarch who gambled away their beloved estate, Mannerling. Each of Lizzie's sisters had been entrusted by their ambitious mother to cast lures for the various owners of their former home. Instead, each one married for love. Now it's Lizzie's turn to save Mannerling. But the new owner, the Duke of Severnshire, is far too arrogant for Lizzie's heart. And while the duke has no intentions toward the saucy chit, her curt dismissal of him is perplexing - no woman has ever refused him.

Revisado: 08-04-20
This series is my favorite of all the Marion Chesney regency novels. the only problem is they changed the reader for this final book in the series. this is a bummer since the person who read all the other books had voices for each character which I think are excellent I don't mind this new reader I have heard her many times but it's a shock to all of a sudden have mrs trumble speaking in a totally different way. it kind of ruined the story for me

The crown of England is the oldest surviving political institution in Europe. Throughout this audiobook Dr David Starkey emphasises the Crown's endless capacity to adapt to circumstances and reshape national policy, whilst he unmasks the personalities and achievements, the defeats and victories, which lie behind the kings and queens of British history. Each of these monarchs has contributed to the religion, geography, laws, language, and government which we live with today.

My list favorite kind of history
Revisado: 07-02-20
This is my least favorite type of history book because there are literally no personal details there is no original documentation such as letters everything is a distant overview mainly concerned with political accounts there are not even any interesting details about any of the monarchs. for example the Georges are barely covered and what is mentioned is completely boring Caroline the wife of George II merits about 3 sentences and she was one of the more interesting Queen concerts so I don't think this type of biography is really in style anymore and I highly prefer a more personal account with a focus on details and not just a recitation of political happenings which anybody can look up on Wikipedia

Certainly the two should never have met. The handsome, wealthy Marquess of Rockingham was the most notorious man in London, as infamous for his violent temper as he was for his intemperate ways. Miss Lucinda Westerville was a country vicar's daughter, as innocent as she was lovely and as proper as a young lady could possibly be. Yet when this improbably matched pair met at a glittering social ball, they had struck the dubious bargain to become man and wife.

another Chesney charmer
Revisado: 03-22-20
this review will probably only benefit dyed in the wool Chesney fans. this story had a fascinating beginning but the resolution of problems is very weak and cursory. sooner interesting themes are explored, such as child abuse, but then dropped. the heroine is intelligent and plucky, but annoyingly inflexible. way too many villains for such a frail plot. i definitely do not enjoy this narrator but have become immune to her weird intonations and utter lack of nuance

boring pablum
Revisado: 03-02-20
this book is about as savory and spicy as baby cereal. nothing new and excruciating detail about nothing. one example: the last meeting between Elizabeth and the Duke of Windsor, main detail noted is the smartness of his blazer. really long description of habits of church going. many boring quotes from sycophants. i thought, until this book, that i had a limitless interest in British royalty but this book broke me.

Historia
Some ladies who served at the Tudor court are only faceless silhouettes lost to the sands of time, but there are those who dedicated their lives to please their royal mistresses and left documentation, allowing us to piece their life stories together and link them to the stories of Tudor queens. These female attendants saw their queens and princesses up close and often used their intimate bonds to their own benefit. Some were beloved, others hated. This is the story of the ladies of the Tudor court like you've never heard it before.

the title is deceiving
Revisado: 12-15-19
this book is not for anyone who has already read a lot about the Tudors. There is a lot of time spent on reviewing well known events and facts and giving a sketchy outline of not very interesting occurrences, if you're already well read on this period.
also there are excursions off into sidelines there are not particularly interesting. Actual information on the ladies-in-waiting is extremely sparse considering that is purportly the point of this book. So it becomes just another book about the same old story of the tutor years that has been told time and time again.
For one example the reign of Mary tudor is covered in very little detail in terms of her obstetrical difficulties which one would think would be an area where the ladies in waiting would have more influence and be more documented. in fact I have read quite extensive writings with details about her various pseudo pregnancies in other books which were not covered in this book.
So if you know nothing about this period you might enjoy this book however if you are a tutor afficianado I would give it a pass
