Jonathan Keeble is a great voice actor, I loved his work in Fury of Magnus

The book itself immediately falls into an issue of jumping between settings and not giving the reader a benefit of the doubt.

It begins in the past, jumps to the present, swaps between protagonist and antagonist perspectives, and then waffles between flashbacks and present day.

Rather than running fluidly, it feels like the author is too impatient to explain the history of the characters. I would've preferred if the events were in sequence, or the past of the characters were left a mystery for later.

instead it feels like the narrative voice is talking down to the audience, just adding padding in between the next sequence of big robot fights.

Oltyx is a great imperfect character

My favorite aspect of this book is the focus on Necron psychology. Oltyx's anxiety, amplified by the doctrinal nature of Necron culture, is an engaging vessel for observing his growth as the master of his dynasty and himself.

He is delightfully flawed and makes the tension of his responses to struggles unpredictable. Just as how the Necrons as a whole are stripped of soul, Oltyx is only regaining his identity in a crucible of conflict after having lived so long without the authority he envied. It is observing his realizations that kept my engagement.

High Rpublic has really proven to me how much a villain sell a story, and the Nihil feel like paper cutouts.

Typically, I'd try to make these reviews longer, but the story was kinda forgettable.

I got this book because I was interested in the perspective of the Custodians. But like other warhammer books, I feel its narrative is weakened by too many characters.
There are some cool cameos, the time period of the setting is significant, and learning about the inner working of the imperial government is interesting, but all of that only take up 1/3rd of the whole narrative. Beyond that, I feel the story is dragged along.

Although interesting to hear the perspective of a primarch in the 41st millennia, dynamic narration between multiple characters that swap between the first and third persons becomes jarring.

Son of the forest follows the perspective of the Lion, but also a fallen astartes, and the forces of chaos that act as antagonist. on top of that, the lion also has the ability to seemingly transpose himself to multiple settings, while also skimming between literal planets, and dream-like metaphorical worlds.

Early on, these transitions were interesting, but later in the book, it becomes tiresome to keep track of what's happening and also recall who the focus is on. Pacing in the 3rd half of the book becomes an issue, and I felt fatigue by the last confrontation.

I feel this could've been solved by having less characters and a more consistent narration style; either choosing to make the story follow the Lion, or having it from the perspective of someone telling us about the awe of being in the presence of him.

Analytical language creates an in depth atmosphere to the starwars setting, especially in regards to its politics and social classes. Setting and character perspectives are described especially vibrantly, making this like an immersive tour of the galaxy before the events of the films.

Daniel Davis' steady voice is a great companion to the tone of Plagueis and Palpatine infiltrating the republic with surgical precision, and has a great range that keeps the various characters distinct. The material also pays homage to the events of the Darth Bane series, and fits itself subtly into he events of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones.

My initial hesitation is there are moments that feel like Plagueis is an inserted character around the narrative of Phantom Menace, but I feel this pays more to bringing renewed interest in the film, than to take away from the flow of the book.

I read this after Infinite and Divine, and I was not disappointed. The necrons of 40k continue to be an intriguing contradiction of alien, yet familiar. This book handles character growth well an concludes satisfactorily while still leaving th door open to the next in the series.

This reading isn't particularly engaging. James Earl Jones has a good voice, but he seems to be mentally absent while reading. Abrupt cuts sound like blatant edits and it doesn't flow well.

I would say this toneless reading would benefit this audiobible for study purposes, but the chapters are not labeled, making it difficult to find a specific place in the text.

The short span of this audio book works well in a rush to remind the listener to calm down in between a busy schedule.
Good for work lunches or car rides, the author and reader takes a relaxed tone and helps create a mindful space that reminds us of the origin of suffering and how to cope with the stress in the face of daily living. A good and practical introduction to zen.

There's clever nods to future events in the series without being too advert or blatant for newcomers.

my favorite moments are the contrasts between humans interacting with astartes, and astartes with primarchs. The frequent clashes between these transhuman groups highlights the interesting cultural boundaries of the setting, and some characters even debate the philosophy of their crusade.

although my initial interest was to explore the 40k property more, I love how the writing puts humanity under a microscope.
