It’s not a slow novel by any means, but if you’re not used to Brett Easton Ellis and his work, you could be drowning in minutia one second, and witnessing a grotesque or insanely graphic act of violence next. It meanders a bit, but it’s less about the plot and more about the trauma of one’s past, one’s grip on memories of it, and how well we can trust our past selves.

By the end of this book, I was as drained as its surviving characters were, and just as stressed. So many questions remained, yet I was ok with not having the answers. Theres also something tender about this book, and how well it bounces around from the trawlers crimes and the day to day of Brett and his friends at Buckley Prep School. How it begins to mix the two, became almost hallucinatory.

If you want a mix of Scream, A Dario Argento film, Euphoria, 90210, and bits of his past book-AMERICAN PSYCHO, you’ll love this.

A little creepy, very sad and melancholic. I really cared for Penny and felt her confusion.
