Easy to follow if you have psychotherapy training
Revisado: 06-01-23
I think the book was brief and specific. Something I appreciate when there’s so much reading/listening I need to do.
It provides practical exercises that can be done everyday.
I don’t think this is a self-help book. If you are a patient or client is better to read this after beginning ACT with a trained psychotherapist.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Historia
In this astonishing and startling book, award-winning science and history writer Robert Whitaker investigates a medical mystery: Why has the number of disabled mentally ill in the United States tripled over the past two decades? Every day, 1,100 adults and children are added to the government disability rolls because they have become newly disabled by mental illness, with this epidemic spreading most rapidly among our nations children. What is going on?

Revisado: 08-18-22
Good questions. Very misinformed conclusions. The author believes are in the forefront with little option of challenging his own believes. A book about psychopathology and psychopharmacology that is full of bad reasoning.

Eating is an indispensable human activity. As a result, whether we realize it or not, the drive to obtain food has been a major catalyst across all of history, from prehistoric times to the present. Epicure Jean-Anthelme Brillat-Savarin said it best: "Gastronomy governs the whole life of man."

Great course, although Title should change
Revisado: 06-04-21
I loved that this professor included mini examples of cooking through the lectures. My main issue is with what the title implies. It should have been titled:
“Food: A Cultural Culinary History from a very WESTERN and NORTH AMERICAN point of view because research and writing time wasn’t dedicated to delving in contemporary Asian, Latinamerican, and African food practices or Food Practices as Related to the United States Experience.”
When speaking of ANCIENT cooking and origins of foods the author hits (I believe) the spot between broad and specific topics. When it starts to lecture about post-medieval times is mainly fixed in the Western Hemisphere. Although I recognize that the author made an effort to include Native American pre-colonial food practices.
I really liked his attempt to predict future food practices in the United States. I believe he will be on point in many of his predictions.

The ancient world has cast a long shadow, influencing our customs and religious beliefs, our laws, and the form of our governments. It has taught us when and how we make war or pursue peace. It has shaped the buildings we live and work in and the art we hang on our walls. It has given us the calendar that organizes our year and has left its mark on the games we play.

A truly universal history
Revisado: 04-20-21
Contrary to many “universal history” that usually concentrates on Egypt, Greek, and maybe some Arab culture, this course provides summarized information about a broader range of cultures from ancient Asia to the Americas. The professor teaches about China, India, Mesoamerica, and even the Polynesians, which is an exception on other Great Courses I've listened to.

Historia
Recent research has revealed that the richest person of all time lived in the 14th century in West Africa and went by many names, including Kankan Musa Keita, Emir of Melle, Lord of the Mines of Wangara, Conqueror of Ghanata, and the Lion of Mali II, but today he is usually referred to as Mansa Musa. Adjusting his wealth to modern values, he was worth about an estimated $400 billion as the Sultan of ancient Mali, which controlled the trade routes across the Sahara Desert.

Should’ve been a 2 star podcast
Revisado: 03-27-21
This reading should've been a 2-star FREE podcast.
The book lacks depth in analysis, information and historical facts. It barely said anything about Mansa Musa and Timbuktu.
The narrator should consider his choice of tone of voice when reading quotes. They were comical.

Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Historia
In 1950, after over 50 years of military occupation and colonial rule, the Nationalist Party of Puerto Rico staged an unsuccessful armed insurrection against the United States. Violence swept through the island: Assassins were sent to kill President Harry Truman, gunfights roared in eight towns, police stations and post offices were burned down. In order to suppress this uprising, the US Army deployed thousands of troops and bombarded two towns.

Narrators: Please practice pronunciation of other languages
Revisado: 05-12-20
I didn’t expect a Spanish pronunciation as a native speaker, the narrator has a great voice and I recognize the effort of reading Spanish words better than other places, but i suggest more practice for Spanish pronunciation by listening to a native speaker or using a pronunciation guide. Many words where read as someone using English pronunciation rules rather than Spanish. So the issue is not accent, but rule pronunciation.
Note: the same applies to pronunciation in other languages.
Honest Disclaimer: I’m a native Spanish speaker who consumes English speaking media.

It has its plot twist and the important characters (Tygon) for the psychological health of the author and, of course, for the reader.
