Historia
Elaine Brown assumed her role as the first and only female leader of the Black Panther Party with these words: “I have all the guns and all the money. I can withstand challenge from without and from within. Am I right, Comrade?” It was August 1974. From a small Oakland-based cell, the Panthers had grown to become a revolutionary national organization. How Brown came to a position of power over this paramilitary, male-dominated organization, and what she did with that power, is a riveting, unsparing account of self-discovery.

Thank goodness Elaine made it through
Revisado: 04-03-25
It is stories like these that make one think about far we have not come, how far we almost got, and how hard the pendulum is swinging back. It is stories like these that remind me that hardship will be necessary if we want to inflict real change. It is stories from strong Black women that show what real strength, courage, and hope are. Thank you, Elaine.

Historia
Terry Crews spent decades cultivating his bodybuilder physique and bravado. On the outside, he seemed invincible: he escaped his abusive father, went pro in the NFL, and broke into the glamorous world of Hollywood. But his fixation with appearing outwardly tough eventually turned into an exhausting performance in which repressing his emotions let them get the better of him—leading him into addiction and threatening the most important relationships in his life. Now Crews is sharing the raw, never-before-told story of his quest to find the true meaning of toughness.

On the morning of August 12, 2022, Salman Rushdie was standing onstage at the Chautauqua Institution, preparing to give a lecture on the importance of keeping writers safe from harm, when a man in black—black clothes, black mask—rushed down the aisle toward him, wielding a knife. His first thought: So it’s you. Here you are. What followed was a horrific act of violence that shook the literary world and beyond.

one of the most depressing things about this book is too much is still true. we have made little progress in the most important aspects, even though we have come so far. white people still do not see Black people as Men/Women.

He was arrested after fleeing a demonstration, later survived a near-lynching at the hands of law enforcement, and spent the next seven years on chain gangs. During that time he met the undaunted Patsy, who would become his wife. Years later, at the age of 51 and with Patsy’s encouragement, he started drawing and painting scenes from his youth using leather tooling skills he learned in prison.

Revisado: 05-31-24
I love everything about this book. I heard of Rembert from Antiques Road Show abd that he had a book, and it fit beautifully in my ongoing education of the Black experience in America. I only wish I could purchase some of his art at some point, a print would never do. Just a fantastic story from a fantastic man. I am so thankful he wrote this book. I am a very particular person when it comes to narrators, and Graham did a great job. I will listen to this again at some point.

I love Frederick Douglas. It is so crazy and very sad to know people have been calling out xian hypocrisy in the US for this long. We still deal with all of rhese issues today; slavery never ended. These are facts.
