Narrated by: Stina Nielsen and Saskia Maarleveld both do a wonderful reading of this beautifully illustrated debut.

A historical fiction debut about obsession and loss…

There are romantic and erotic components in this poetic love story, (long descriptions of sensual encounters, that may offend some) with a central theme of home throughout. Touching upon relationships, unspoken truths, xenophobic and antisemitic tendencies, and misogyny.

I enjoyed her writing and found the story very compelling. Most significant is the character development of Isabel over the course of the novel. I was surprised of learning the things the Dutch government did post-war. I am looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

PENITENCE by Kristen Koval

Therese Plummer does a fine reading of this suspenseful story. This is Kristen Koval’s debut and I thought it was well written and I’m excited to see what she does next.

Opening family wounds and bringing dark truths to light with the guilt we live with.

Lives are shattered when Angie and David discovery a shocking murder in their home. Turning to a mom of a former boyfriend of Angie’s, for legal counsel, both Angie and David are confronted by impossible decisions. Digging into the intricacies of forgiveness and human frailty. The journey of finding forgiveness, compassion, and mistakes is not always a clear path.

ALL THE GLIMMERING STARS by Mark T. Sullivan

Audio narration read by Junior Nyong’o was perfectly done and I enjoyed listening to it. I paired the audio with the book too.

A story of the Ugandan history and life for those living there. A historical fiction read inspired by a true story of the experiences of Anthony Opoka and Florence Okori, two Ugandan teens who were kidnapped from there home villages and turned into warriors for a messianic warlord, Joseph Kony, of the LRA (the Lord’s Resistance Army) in the 1990s. Joseph Kony wasn’t able to recruit enough soldiers to overthrow the government, so he decided to start kidnapping children and molding them into soldiers and making them killing machines. Roughly 35,000 children were taken and turned into these soldiers.

Mark T. Sullivan —- “I look for stories that are inherently moving, inspiring, potentially healing to some people, and potentially transforming to some readers. So this story hit all those criteria right off the bat.” Mark was an investigative journalist before his historical fiction-writing career, so the research he does for his books comes naturally, and his writing is beautifully done. I’ve read his book, Beneath a Scarlet Sky, that is as exceptional as, All the Glimmering Stars. I want to read, The Last Valley, also. He was able to interview Anthony and Florence, as well as, close to 50 others from Uganda and bring this story to life. This is a dark, dark story that’s truly evil of what these kids and families suffered, but it’s also about survival, and a love story within a story of humanity, as Mark T. Sullivan thinks. A powerful story of two really good people struggling for light in unimaginable darkness. Would be an excellent choice for book clubs.

THE BOG WIFE by Kay Chronister

Shannon McManus does a fine narration of this gothic Appalachian fairy tale horror story. The West Virginia messed-up family dynamic is told from the perspective of each of the children; all having different views on life in the bog. The bog will sustain their survival, if they sacrifice their patriarch to it in exchange for a bog wife who will bear the successor’s child.

If you enjoy complex family dynamics leaning towards cultish tendencies, folklore, and mild horror, this book is for you. In this strange and imaginative world that Kay Chronister penned, I found myself thinking at times, I was listening to a bizarre memoir of a bizarre family. I was completely drawn in by the description of the land and bog and its powerful hold on this family. I look forward to what Kay Chronister does next.

Saskia Maarleveld always does an incredible narration. Another favorite narrator of mine. I also paired this with the book.

At an esteemed summer camp in 1975 in the Adirondack Mountains, a young teenage girl goes missing in the middle of the night when the camp counselors aren’t around. Tension and a sense of doom builds as it becomes known that the missing teen is, Barbara Van Laar, daughter of the wealthy family that owns the camp. This isn’t the first time the Van Laar’s had a missing child; Bear, Barbara’s older brother, who was eight, also went missing years prior. The mother, Alice Van Laar, has never recovered from when Bear went missing.

Moore’s story jumps around in time, from the 1950s into the '70s and features a host of characters. There are intricately interwoven plots among the crowded characters of this narrative. A literary suspense/crime read that will keep you reading and guessing.

“As it unfolds, “The God of the Woods” becomes more and more focused on how its female characters break free — or don’t — of the constraints of their time and social class. Whatever the case, breaking free of the spell Moore casts is close to impossible.” A quote from Maureen Corrigan, a book critic

Touching upon family dynamics, secrets, lies, guilt, betrayal, relationships, trust, abuses of various forms, submissiveness, grief, and justice.
