Historia
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Incredible Description of the West
Revisado: 03-15-25
I listened to this book over two days - just didn't want it to end.
My only dislike was the way too graphic description of violent scenes.
However, overall, it's an absolute treasure!

Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun — until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems. The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader.

terribly disappointing
Revisado: 11-04-21
I've listened to a couple of books by Lee Child and couldn't wait for this one. Unfortunately it was awful. The narrator, Scott Brick, was his usual terrific - the story was improbable and hard to follow.
Lastly, whichever author decided to name the bad guy made a simply awful choice.

Historia
In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

Unbelievably brilliant!
Revisado: 08-17-20
I bought the audio version of this book; once I started it I couldn't stop.
The narrator was perfect and the writing was miles above anything else I'd read/listened to.
As a 70 year old white woman who lived in 7 different states I thought I knew about slavery and its legacy. This book pointed out gaps in my understanding. Some of the vignettes the author included brought me to tears, several made me sick to my stomach. All were enlightening.
Ms. Wilkerson wrote about the 2016 election, saying that some people pointed out that Americans weren't like that. She took the opposite point of view, saying people in the US were exactly like that.
Because of the distinct possibility that her opinion was true, and because the campaign convinced me that if the unthinkable happened, as it did, the man who lost the popular vote would destroy the country, I couldn't stay.
During the campaign, as the Republican nominee showed his true self, it was abundantly clear he could and would do everything possible to dismantle the US. Whenever I told my husband about my feelings he simply said, "Oh he won't win."
The evening the election was called, I burst into tears and told the man to whom I'd been married for more than two decades that I didn't know where I was going, I just know I had to leave and I hoped he'd come with me.
It wasn't just the candidate - it was all of the people who supported him that I refused to be with. I wasn't like that.
We had lots to do but finally moved to Australia in March of 2018. I left my adult children and a grandchild in the US. Staying wasn't an option. I'm still a US citizen so Ms. Wilkerson's book spoke to me. My decision to leave the country I've loved my entire life was a statement that I wasn't like those who voted for him or who supported him.
My husband and I are the same age - to move half way around the world in our late 60ties, to a country where we knew no one, was just something that had to be done. I wanted to remove myself from the caste system described by the author.
I urge everyone to get Caste - it's absolutely necessary.

Jackie Speier was twenty-eight when she joined Congressman Leo Ryan’s delegation to rescue defectors from cult leader Jim Jones’s Peoples Temple in Jonestown, Guyana. Ryan was killed on the airstrip tarmac. Jackie was shot five times at point-blank range. While recovering from what would become one of the most harrowing tragedies in recent history, Jackie had to choose: Would she become a victim or a fighter? The choice to survive against unfathomable odds empowered her with a resolve to become a vocal proponent for human rights.

Incredibly Inspiring
Revisado: 11-01-19
I was vaguely aware of the Jonestown horror story but not until I heard this book by Congresswoman Jackie Speier did I understand what happened there. Ms. Speier never wallows in self-pity, nor does she indicate the many challenges and struggles she encountered in her life were simply and easily met and overcome. She presents her story in a compelling and inspiring way.
I plan to listen to this book again - there's no doubt it will move me even more!

disappointing at best
Revisado: 10-06-19
I really wanted to Iike this book. It had a strong woman who struggled to keep up with her male counterparts in a male dominated field. She did that exceptionally well.
The problem was the tension between her and the attractive team leader. This was so long and drawn out I did something I never do - I skipped ahead because this repetitiveness just got to me.
I wanted to read more about the plot, hatched by a former Congress person, to take out the "go teams". Unfortunately that got short shrift.
Spoiler alert - eventually when "Babe" and Ace, the team leader, hooked up and showed up at a training exercise, Ace decided to make a statement to the other team members. He put his arm around Babe's neck and announced, "She's mine." That impressed the team members (all male except for Babe) and seemed to sit just right with the strong woman, who throughout the book had tried to resist her feelings for him.
Really?? Instead of any number of other statements, such as ,"She's the best part of my life" or "Can't believe how lucky I am - she really likes me" or "We finally figured out we belong together", nope, he says what could be said of a dog or a car or any other piece of property.
As I said, I really wanted to enjoy this book but the author made sure that wasn't possible.

Beautifully written and exceptionality motivating!
Revisado: 09-14-19
Not only did the author clearly tell of the insidious way "normal" life changed in Germany in the 1930ties, she made virtually all major characters experience their own disbelief in what they saw their government doing; each went through various levels of questioning before they committed to resisting.
Among the marks of a great author is their ability to cause readers to really feel what the characters feel. This was done in spades.
Definitely planning to listen again and again!!

In ancient texts, there are stories about men who struck from the shadows, seemingly beyond the reach of death itself. These men were considered part angel, part demon. Their loyalty was to their families, their friends, and their kings. You crossed these men at your peril. And once crossed, there was no crossing back. They were fearless; men of honor who have been known throughout history by different names: Spartan, Viking, Samurai.

The BEST!
Revisado: 06-26-19
I have 23 books by David Baldacci and this one was, by far, the most enjoyable.
This is the first book by the author that actually made me cry. Mr. Baldacci outdid himself in describing Scott Harvath's emotional grief at the loss of his new bride. And that was in addition to stellar writing about Scott"s determination to accomplish whatever he sets his mind to.
Given the multitude of reasons for Scott to lose hope or to be completely consumed by hate, I found it comforting to have this bigger than life character remember how many reasons he had to feel grateful.
I fully expected a good book but this time my expectations were definitely exceeded!
