Historia
Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Inconsistent Ensemble Cast
Revisado: 12-01-20
The Baron Harkonan (sp?), for example, had a dedicated voice actor, but not all his lines were delivered by that actor. The narrator often read them. at first I thought maybe the narrator was only reading for the Baron's internal thoughts, but there were also lines of Baron dialogue spoken to other characters out loud. This was jarring to me and really took me out of the story.

Knowledge is power. That would be the motto of Lander University, had it not been snatched up and used to death by others long before the school was founded. For while Lander offers a full range of courses to nearly all students, it also offers a small number of specialty classes to a very select few. Lander is home to the Hero Certification Program, a curriculum designed to develop students with superhuman capabilities, commonly known as Supers, into official Heroes.

Kinda Neckbeardy
Revisado: 10-29-20
The story has been ok and definitely entertaining enough to keep me listening. However, a lot of the details make the writing feel pretty juvenile. The casual dialogue between basically all the characters has a really overly technical vibe to it, and it comes off as a really shallow attempt to make everything seem more intelligent. As a result, the conversations feel cold and robotic, like Data from Star Trek.
There's a pretty misogynistic characters, and I felt pretty disappointed in how they were handled. Their perspectives were shown to be problematic but the writing also sort of tried to justify it. Overall, there are a lot of cringey Men-Writing-Women tropes in here.
A lot of the descriptive imagery was so bad that it took me out of the story. One (paraphrased) example of this was towards the end-- "he was as still as a bathtub of water left out too long." It's clumsy and pretty lame sounding.
I bought this looking for something entertaining, and it fit that bill enough that I don't regret the purchase. However, all the elements of juvenile writing makes me not really interested in continuing the series.

A satisfactory, if not slightly confusing read
Revisado: 09-29-20
While I enjoyed this book overall, I found the writing at times to be somewhat clumsy. There are lots of sections of abstract concepts where the character is delving into memories and her inner thoughts. I often found these to be confusing and hard to follow.

Historia
The Galahad, a faster-than-light spacecraft, carries 50 scientists and engineers on a mission to prepare Kepler 452b, Earth's nearest habitable neighbor at 1400 light years away. With Earth no longer habitable and the Mars colony slowly failing, they are humanity's best hope. After 10 years in a failed cryogenic bed - body asleep, mind awake - William Chanokh's torture comes to an end as the fog clears, the hatch opens, and his friend and fellow hacker, Tom, greets him...by stabbing a screwdriver into his heart. This is the first time William dies.

Juvenile and Underdeveloped Writing
Revisado: 12-05-19
The premise of this book and indeed the first few hours of listening were super interesting. However, the characters and story felt very underdeveloped. It felt meandering, with no real direction. It bounced between plot points quickly, with little justification within the story for the decisions made. The characters are really underdeveloped and generic. The last few hours had some pretty cringy romance in it, again feeling like it was targeting a younger audience. The science fiction aspect seemed to have a lot of hand waving and non-sensical explanations and character thought processes, which really felt like it cheapened the book. And the ending of the book, without spoiling the plot, is my least favorite kind of lazy ending. It's the kind of ending that makes me think "what was the point of even reading this?"
As always, RC Bray was a great narrator. However, though the book concept had a lot of promise, the writing in this case just felt really disappointing, I kind of wish I'd spent this credit on another book.

Historia
The number one New York Times best-selling story about American Olympic triumph in Nazi Germany, the inspiration for the PBS documentary The Boys of '36, broadcast to coincide with the 2016 Summer Olympics and the 80th anniversary of the boys' gold medal race. Out of the depths of the Depression comes an irresistible story about beating the odds and finding hope in the most desperate of times - the improbable, intimate account of how nine working-class boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant.

Bored!
Revisado: 05-24-17
I had a hard time staying diligent and continuing to listen. I just didn't find the story very engaging, and in fact it felt very repetitive. The combination of the story and the narrator's somewhat dry performance just wasn't my style. I ended up stopping about 2/3 of the way through and just watched the PBS documentary on the same subject instead. Overall, not my cup of tea.
