Nice Discussion
Revisado: 01-10-25
This is an interview of sorts with the custodians of the Doyle estate. Their discussion provides some interesting tidbits about Doyle's life and his inspiration. If you are already an expert on Should, you probably didn't want to listen to this. But if you aren't, this will prove interesting in that it presents the wide range of Doyle's interests outside of Sherlock Holmes and will make you appreciate Doyle as more than the Great Detective's creator.

Delightful!
Revisado: 01-09-25
Yes the audio is poor compared to your Spotify account but it's Agatha talking about being an author. Here you learn where Marple and Poirot came from as well as her other characters, how they fit or didn't fit in various tales, which she got tired of, and some of her frustrations with the writer's craft.
Very practical, unpretentious, honest, and simple somewhat wide ranging discussion of her life as an author. This is a gem.

A unique take on the Moriarty character, introducing us to his early career in crime. In that vein, the characters are believable, the stories have sufficient twists, and the performances are well done.

Nice Collection
Revisado: 01-07-25
The stories in this volume are entertaining in the Holmsian fashion - few abrupt plot twists. The performance is well done. I'm some recordings the performance can grate on the ears either with a non agreeable tone or either a rushed or more often too slow pace. The boxes in this volume are agreeable all around.

Historia
In 1914, the war which was to have been wrapped up by Christmas had - in reality - only just begun, as all sides entrenched themselves deeper into the Great War. Christmas Eve, 1914 follows one company of British officers as they rotate forward to spend their Christmas on the front lines, a mere 80 yards from the German guns. Upper- and working-class men and boys are thrown together into one trench and struggle to survive.

Historia
When the papal apartments are burgled in 1901, Sherlock Holmes is summoned to Rome by Pope Leo XII. After learning from the pontiff that several priceless cameos that could prove compromising to the church, and perhaps determine the future of the newly unified Italy, have been stolen, Holmes is asked to recover them. In a parallel story, Michelangelo, the toast of Rome in 1501 after the unveiling of his Pieta, is commissioned by Pope Alexander VI, the last of the Borgia pontiffs, with creating the cameos that will bedevil Holmes and the papacy four centuries later.

Interesting (adult) Story; questionable execution
Revisado: 09-25-23
Probably should have a maturity rating. The story is pretty good and I like the device of intertwining two related stories. That technique worked well here. Not too many plot twists however; both stories move along with no surprises.
The execution however, lacks. The volume isn't leveled, resulting in some voices being overly loud and others barely detectable. This should have been addressed in post production - or tested prior to recording. Many of the voices - especially the major ones sound alike - they all sound like the Godfather. Sherlock's voice is off-putting. Too deep, too slow, and with a Sean Connery-esque slurred S.

A great addition to the corpus
Revisado: 08-09-23
This is a long listen and I was skeptical at first. The narrative style is of intertwined stories from the various characters' viewpoints and this of course adds to length. The story is wide ranging from England to New York and then to Chicago and with a nefarious plot just as grand. Good action, tense confrontations, and enough developments to keep the story moving and interesting. The ordinance was good but again, I have to admit to an early negative bias - the narrative seemed too soft and measured. However, as the story proceeds, that easy narration provided a nice counterpoint to the relative noise caused by the other characters.
This is a good listen.

Great Addition to the Tradition
Revisado: 07-18-23
Wonderful story with some twists but not many. Even so, the story is engaging and enjoyable. The story itself - with above average performance - tends to move somewhat slowly at the beginning. It does pick up the pace toward the end and the final confrontation is action packed.
Why not a great performance? Because of the mentioned slowness at the beginning, especially in the voice of Watson and because some of the voices get somewhat muddied. There are a number of voices and so this is not a great crime.
The story and this recording are recommended.

A Welcome Addition to the Series
Revisado: 02-27-23
What can I say? This is one of my favorite series. The stories are always well constructed and the performance again here, was spot on. Great inflection, cadence, and tone. Dudgeon's skill in this regard adds immeasurably to bringing the story alive and brings the humor to the fore. Costello and Richards craft entertaining stories, character development, and ploy twists, and Dudgeon makes them shine. What a treat!
Buy and listen to every one of these; they really are wonderful.

Engaging and funny
Revisado: 09-14-22
This is a wonderful Wodehouse installment. Funny in many places, the story is classic tongue in cheek drama. Love the story within a story when the narrator speaks to the listener. Good use of humor, asides, hooks make the story more engaging than a straight telling would have been. The performance adds immeasurably to the enjoyment of the story and punctuates the humor well.
