Poignant Heroine

This story had me hooked. Loved learning the family lore and the change in time periods of the storylines, but how they come together in the end. Well written and well read.

Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Real & Relatable
Revisado: 10-29-24
Much like many of the stories we all-too-often hear regarding children in showbiz, this one takes a bit of a dark turn, but 1) I love how realistic this story was and 2) I enjoyed hearing how McCurdy found her truth and self. As a daughter of a severely mentally ill biological mom, and undiagnosed, but unhealthy adopted mother, there was much I could relate to which was heartbreakingly appreciated. Thank you for telling your story, it helped me feel seen and I hope it helped you find yourself more deeply than ever so you could move into the next phase of thriving for yourself. 🫶🏼

Historia
Sella is tired of being a failure. She has a lovely, cozy shop—an heirloom from her mother—, a snarky feline familiar, and one, single friend to call her own. It should be enough. But Sella’s magical abilities left a stain on her hometown, and even years away didn’t repair her reputation. The life of a kitchen witch is rough when everyone thinks Sella’s magical blends of coffee and tea will leave them with boils instead of the intended “motivation” or “self-compassion.” But when a murder shakes the town and Sella’s best friend becomes suspect one, failure is a luxury they can’t afford.

This was an easy listen and I can’t wait until the next in the series is recorded!!! An easy listen. As a neurospicy adult, it helps me to listen to stories so I’m able to get tasks done. My son (8) listened with me and he is excited to listen to the next one too! This was about the age I began reading every Nancy Drew I could get my hands on so it’s fun to have a mystery series he and I can share. Thanks, Wren! Keep it up! Waiting patiently for the Audible version of book 2.

Sobering and Heartfelt Story
Revisado: 10-29-24
What I absolutely LOVE about Grisham novels is the education about nuanced subject matter. Sooley is of no consequence regarding this pattern of his. You absolutely fall in love with Samuel Sooleyman as well as his Sudanese family whose fled to Uganda and living in a refugee camp. The ending was not necessarily what I was expecting, but it was very real as the story addressed the issues with young athletes entering the pros too early. Great listen.
