Historia
The new novel - a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan - from the internationally acclaimed author, his first since IQ84. Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

Had to give up
Revisado: 10-06-14
I love Murakami, so I'll assume this is a good book. But the performer's reading of dialogue is appalling. The characters become swollen-tongued boobs, lumping from one disconnected statement to another.
I had to return this very disappointing version, and will get one with a different narrator.

Historia
In the frigid pre-dawn hours, in a distressed Midwestern city, hundreds of desperate unemployed folks are lined up for a spot at a job fair. Without warning, a lone driver plows through the crowd in a stolen Mercedes, running over the innocent, backing up, and charging again. Eight people are killed; fifteen are wounded. The killer escapes. Mr. Mercedes is a war between good and evil, from the master of suspense whose insight into the mind of this obsessed, insane killer is chilling and unforgettable.

Sorry Stphen, but no
Revisado: 07-21-14
I'm SK's number one fan but I think he misses the mark with this one. There's not the (often unnecessary, I think) resort to alien and/or supernatural intervention to resolve the story. There is the requisite love interest, however far fetched or unnecessary. But here the romp between the retred protagonist and sexy younger woman feels hollow. It disturbs what would otherwise have been a good book. Tough to top Dr Sleep, though.
Another great performance from Will Patton.

It is 1866 and Walter Moody has come to make his fortune upon the New Zealand goldfields. On arrival, he stumbles across a tense gathering of 12 local men, who have met in secret to discuss a series of unsolved crimes. A wealthy man has vanished, a whore has tried to end her life, and an enormous fortune has been discovered in the home of a luckless drunk. Moody is soon drawn into the mystery: a network of fates and fortunes that is as complex and exquisitely patterned as the night sky.

Good but not good enough...
Revisado: 06-24-14
...to justify overly complex structure of over-lapping plot lines. The ending wasn't so much an anticipated insight or understanding, but a relief I kinda sorta got what had happened.

Historia
It was the dead thing they found hanging from a tree that changed the trip beyond recognition. When four old University friends set off into the Scandinavian wilderness of the Arctic Circle, they aim to briefly escape the problems of their lives and reconnect. But when Luke, the only man still single and living a precarious existence, finds he has little left in common with his well-heeled friends, tensions rise. A shortcut meant to ease their hike turns into a nightmare scenario that could cost them their lives.

11 hours too long?
Revisado: 06-16-14
I so wanted to like this after having received a recommendation Adam Nevill is the UK's Stephen King.
I felt the characters missed enough roundness. But most important, the author didn't play enough with the blurring between nightmare and its opposite. I wanted more ambiguity, if you see what I mean. Or maybe the opposite: blatant 'magical realism' 'a la Murakami.
Sorry: I wanted the rather inevitable ending to happen sooner than later.

The one and only Conn Iggulden takes on the story of the mighty Kublai Khan. An epic tale of a great and heroic mind; his action-packed rule; and how in conquering one-fifth of the world’s inhabited land, he changed the course of history forever.A scholar who conquered an empire larger than those of Alexander or Caesar.A warrior who would rule a fifth of the world with strength and wisdom.A man who betrayed a brother to protect a nation.

Good story, as you would expect
Revisado: 03-31-13
Another good story by Iggulden. Don't expect to be 'enlightened' but it is very entertaining. RE Grant was too present as RE Grant, in my opinion.

Historia
Time has moved on for Quirke, the world-weary pathologist first encountered in Christine Falls. It is the middle of the 1950s, that low, dishonourable decade; a woman he loved has died, a man he once admired is dying, while the daughter he for so long denied is still finding it hard to accept him as her father. When an old acquaintance approaches him about his wife's apparent suicide, Quirke recognizes trouble but, as always, trouble is something he cannot resist.

Finished as fast as a couple of teenagers!
Revisado: 11-22-11
I was enjoying the book and performance. Enough complexity and characterisation (particularly the cockney hairdresser). And then 'blamo': the plot is tied up in what felt like a couple of minutes. A disappointing end to an otherwise good read/listen.
