Historia
The story of humankind is usually told as one of technological innovation and economic influence—of arrowheads and atomic bombs, settlers and stock markets. But behind it all, there is an even more fundamental driver: Food. In Animal, Vegetable, Junk, trusted food authority Mark Bittman offers a panoramic view of how the frenzy for food has driven human history to some of its most catastrophic moments.

You are what you eat!
Revisado: 08-08-24
The book talks about everything that been going on with food over human history.
If you are a farmer know one or your family was involved in farming that you know about, it’s a story about greed and sacrifice, but the farmer is the one doing the sacrifice and people (rich, kings, government or corporations) are the greedy. If you only work the land you get just enough to survive. If you buy the land someone or somehow you are getting duped and taken to the poor house. Everyone gets rich but you. Things need to change but will they?
We can only hope!

Classic everyone should read then listen, then enjoy the movie. But know the whole story first. Especially if you did not from the time of its writing.

From the archives of the American Film Institute comes a unique picture of what it was like to work in Hollywood from its beginnings to its present day. Gleaned from nearly three thousand interviews, involving four hundred voices from the industry, Hollywood: The Oral History, lets a listener “listen in” on candid remarks from the biggest names in front of the camera—Bette Davis, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Harold Lloyd—to the biggest behind it—Frank Capra, Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Jordan Peele, as well as the lesser known individuals that shaped what was heard and seen on screen.

Revisado: 05-31-24
Love this book. Could have used a few more readers for different characters and their characters power. Otherwise it’s beautifully done read written and expressed.
If you watch movies and want to understand how they made the screen or your movie collection this book is for you!

For years, the United States was confident that the newly democratic Russia and increasingly wealthy China could be lured into a Western-led order that promised prosperity and relative peace—so long as they agreed to Washington’s terms. By the time America emerged from the age of terrorism, it was clear that this had been a fantasy.

Looking at all the players in our lives.
Revisado: 05-17-24
Nothing to dislike it tell a very compelling story. Explains what our and everyone government does and why we cannot let inexperienced officials run the government. We need to thank the officials who did what presidents wouldn’t or didn’t understand how to get things done.
I had thought a business person would be a good idea in the presidency, in our form of government, that is not a good idea. Business people don’t get their own way. They have to work with others. This is something they’re not good at.

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

Historia
In 1918, a fearless 22-year-old arrives in bohemian San Francisco from the Northeast, determined to make her own way. Renaming herself Dorothea Lange, she is soon the celebrated owner of the city’s most prestigious and stylish portrait studio. By the early 1930s, determined to expose the horrific conditions of the nation’s poor, she takes to the road with her camera, creating images that inspire, reform, and define the era. And when the US enters World War II, Dorothea chooses to confront another injustice - the incarceration of thousands of innocent Japanese Americans.

Revisado: 04-01-24
I have read about Dorothea Lange for many years. Such a complex a person and braver than anyone I have ever read about or known. This is a book about a person who constantly regardless of the obstacles moved forward for the good of humanity. Her photos are more than a treasure but a tribute to everything she accomplished.

Historia
We all know Dorothea Lange's iconic photos - the Migrant Mother holding her child, the shoeless children of the Dust Bowl - but now renowned American historian Linda Gordon brings them to three-dimensional life in this groundbreaking exploration of Lange's transformation into a documentarist. Using Lange's life to anchor a moving social history of 20th-century America, Gordon masterfully re-creates bohemian San Francisco, the Depression, and the Japanese-American internment camps.

Amazing person that is missed and needed as an example of a life well live!
Revisado: 03-18-24
We should a lead a life like this. It shows faults as well great triumphs and the struggle that both bring great happiness and sadness along with confidence and self doubt.
She was a great photographer but a total human being. That may be what this society is sorely missing.
This is what our time has brought us.

Historia
J. Robert Oppenheimer was one of the iconic figures of the 20th century, a brilliant physicist who led the effort to build the atomic bomb but later confronted the moral consequences of scientific progress. When he proposed international controls over atomic materials, opposed the development of the hydrogen bomb, and criticized plans for a nuclear war, his ideas were anathema to powerful advocates of a massive nuclear buildup during the anti-Communist hysteria of the early 1950s.

Great book about a great man who was caught up with the hysteria of his day. The sad part this hysteria has never really passed. We are likely living the same world. Can it change? More to the point can we change?

Learning to understand and love yourself
Revisado: 02-13-23
This book is one of the best I have gotten on this subject. We all can use this book to help us with our daily life struggles. I will using what’s in this book probably every day of the week. On myself and looking at everyone I meet new and old. This will be doing with everyone, because we don’t do this in the country anymore. Look at ourselves, we can’t have a holiday together without an argument erupting. Over things we can’t change!
