August is a God-fearing track star who leaves Enugu City to attend university and escape his overbearing sisters. He carries the weight of their lofty expectations, the shame of facing himself, and the haunting memory of a mother he never knew. It’s his first semester and pressures aside, August is making friends, doing well in his classes. He even almost has a girlfriend. There’s only one problem: he can’t stop thinking about Segun, an openly gay student who works at a local cybercafé.

Audre Lorde pioneered "biomythography" in Zami: A New Spelling of My Name, originally published in 1982. In this extraordinary tale, Lorde weaves a narrative tapestry out of the threads of her own life - from her family's immigration to New York through her own coming of age - and the lives of the women who shaped her.

Historia
For Damon Young, existing while Black is an extreme sport. The act of possessing Black skin while searching for space to breathe in America is enough to induce a ceaseless state of angst where questions such as “How should I react here, as a professional black person?” and “Will this white person’s potato salad kill me?” are forever relevant. What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Blacker chronicles Young’s efforts to survive while battling and making sense of the various neuroses his country has given him.

Not what I was expecting
Revisado: 03-29-19
I had been looking forward to and waiting for this book for a long time.
I couldn't decide between 2 or 3 stars overall.
I don't know what I expected, but it wasn't this. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this book, it's beautifully written, it's very personal and there's so much to think about and learn from.
But words being said over and over again drives me nuts, and I felt like it was all over the place, not so much a collection of essays, as a collection of essays from different sections of something. But that's just me. I fully understand other people's high ratings and I do recommend.
I think I'd just been looking forward to this for too long.
I would also have loved for someone else to narrate this book.

Historia
Survival Math is both a personal reckoning and a vital addition to the national conversation about race. Mitchell explores the Portland of his childhood, tracing the ways in which his family managed their lives in and around drugs, prostitution, gangs, and imprisonment as members of a tiny black population in one of the country’s whitest cities. He discusses sex work and serial killers, gangs and guns, near-death experiences, composite fathers, the concept of “hustle,” and the destructive power of drugs and addiction on family.

Not meant for me.
Revisado: 03-08-19
Over my head with this one. Beautifully written, but not meant for me as audience. English is not my first language, but I do only read and listen to books in English and do not consider myself having difficulty reading most books, but the language in this one was so academic that I had to look up so so many words. I gave up and just listened and got the overall meaning. Had that not been the case I would have given this one 4 stars.
Also horrible narrator. Hard to follow and not fall asleep to.

Historia
Nicole Chung was born premature, placed for adoption by her Korean parents, and raised by a white family in a sheltered Oregon town. From childhood, she heard the story of her adoption as a comforting, prepackaged myth. She believed that her biological parents had made the ultimate sacrifice in the hope of giving her a better life, that forever feeling slightly out of place was her fate as a transracial adoptee. But as Nicole grew up, she wondered if the story she'd been told was the whole truth.

Disappointed
Revisado: 10-11-18
As an adopted child myself I was looking forward to this book, but I'm really disappointed. It's a thin story and it's repetitive, but worst of all is the narrator. What an annoying voice for an audio book! I'm returning this one for sure.

Revisado: 07-05-18
First of all: this is a book for HSPs, and they chose THIS narrator!!? I had to take a break every 5 min. because her voice is horrible and robotic.
This is a waste of time. It's HIGHLY generalizing (!) and adds nothing you can't find in every article online about HSP.
Instead I recommend reading "The Highly Sensitive Person" by Elaine N. Aron, Ph.D.
and "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking" by Susan Cain
