not breezy fluff like most recent Brit historical

--well written, meticulously researched, great plot and characters; excellent narration.

This is my favorite genre (historical --and accurate-- setting, intricate plot, some equity issues interwoven). I rarely give five stars, and there is so much fluff churned out these last five years, I hesitate to download new authors, This is the real deal, something I can reread. I wish it were a series.

PS-- no offense, but if you (like me) don't enjoy the Christie formula, don't let that comparison put you off--seems to be publisher boilerplate praise for any murder mystery with multiple suspects set remotely in her her era.

The man can write, spin enthralling tales, create characters as well as Dickens, and explain the world like LeCarre, all while making readers chuckle frequently and laugh out loud occasionally.

This works to start coordinating breath and easy movement. I use it when I’m too tired for regular yoga to relax and help maintain a daily routine. Anyone looking for a good stretch or exercise would be disappointed as it’s closer to a guided meditation than a workout.

After being away from regular yoga practice (and now a senior citizen), this series led me back to performing simple but classic sun salutations with better alignment than in my youth.

I practice a dozen of Fuller's routines from Audible. I wish she had a better system for indicating the intensity of the sessions, especially now that the pdfs are available only after purchase. However, sessions that I find too easy are wonderful for relaxation -- and those that are too challenging are set up so that I will be able to do them, eventually. Of the 70+ guided Yoga/stretch recordings hanging around my place, from VHS and cassettes to streamed stuff, Fuller's are the best price and excellent instruction for audio only.

I will buy anything on sale -- and often regret it. This, however, is one of the best listens in my 15 Audible years, very credit worthy. Who would have thought Richards was so articulate and literate? I review this as I look forward to my second listen, for the social history if not the "Keif" himself (confession: He did charm me after I successfully ignored him for 5 decades).

I tried to listen when this was released but stopped. Because I was re-listening to the entire series, this time I finished -- but it's not like the other installments: it's got high body count, lots of over -the-top action, and grim, grim grim. It also lacks most of the usual dry humour. The good news is that the next in the series returns to the ingredients that make us love these novels: quirky characters, vivid setting, humour, triumph of the spirit, and charm = intelligent escapism.

I’m not sure if this is the same John Lawson who writes the Inspector Troy series (which I like), but I loved this SO NOT Inspector Troy 1950s-60s set detective yarn, with its central mystery weaving around Vietnam and counterculture movements and icons. It’s not action packed or flawless but delivers story and character.

I haven’t written a review in years but found this so engaging and entertaining that want to shout to mystery and social history fiction fans: This is one of the overlooked good ones!

could be the best series you've never read

Clever, funny; well-plotted, peopled, and set; very nice prose; not too dark but not at all silly or predictable-- what more can a lover of Brit crime-espionage fiction ask? (besides more, please!) Herron doesn't make you work as hard as LeCarre or Greene, but that can be a good thing, if you're trying to relax. He is almost in their league as a novelist.

Narration on all three titles in the Slough Houses series is excellent, and even though the narrators vary, listening was almost seamless. Sean Barret deserves an award for Slow Horses (which I couldn't review since it seems no longer available in my region.)

I had a couple of this series from Audible sales unread for years. Once I finally hit the listen button, I went through the 3 available in days and eagerly await Spook Street's appearance, hopefully in audio next month.

This is a decent light mystery and very good campus comedy - if you've taught or even studied on a 21st campus, you'll chortle. Too bad about the "chick lit" label. The protagonist does have a light love interest tangled in the mystery but that's far from central to the plot or humour. Four starts might be a tad generous, but I enjoyed this more than most light mysteries and laughed more than most comedy. If Bow writes a second instalment, I'll download automatically.

I recently re-listened to the Rebus series in order since they are all available to me now. Most stood up - or played even better taken chronologically. In this one, however, Rebus is still an Adam Dalgliesh wanna-be, drinking Chablis, reading and listening to the classics, friendship-hugging vulnerable women. And Rankin is still learning how to write. That said, it's still a decent mystery, just not what we'd expect from Rebus or Rankin a little later in their careers. The biggest value was seeing Holmes and Rebus at the start of their relationship.

I really dislike Page as a Rebus narrator - but that's a more personal choice.
