eerily atmospheric
Revisado: 09-01-23
The book is eerily atmospheric, and always hinting at a massive conspiracy. But it gets weirder and weirder, and the conclusion was not fully satisfying, at least not to me. The narration, by 2 separate narrators (different sections), is excellent and adds to the atmosphere.

This is the mystery Akash Kapur sets out to solve in Better to Have Gone.

Historia
The American Revolution is often portrayed as a high-minded, orderly event whose capstone, the Constitution, provided the ideal framework for a democratic, prosperous nation. Alan Taylor, two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize, gives us a different creation story in this magisterial history of the nation's founding. Rising out of the continental rivalries of European empires and their native allies, Taylor's Revolution builds like a ground fire overspreading Britain's mainland colonies, fueled by local conditions, destructive, hard to quell.

comprehensive history
Revisado: 10-03-20
the book is long but comprehensive. I like that the author does not shy away from the difficult topics like the patriots' and settlers' treatment of Native Americans and Blacks. He also covers the years before and after the revolution as well as other parts of the world besides just what happened in the 13 colonies themselves.
The reader is good but, in differentiating quotations from the narrative text, he uses different voices and accents, which at time sound a little cheesy. My favorite is when he is speaking as a Native American. Overall, a tremendously informative book that will remove those myths of the Revolution that some of us learned in school, and replace them with facts and reality based on primary sources.

Historia
The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world’s most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Historia
We live in a time when the very idea of objective truth is mocked and discounted by the occupants of the White House. Discredited conspiracy theories and ideologies have resurfaced, proven science is once more up for debate, and Russian propaganda floods our screens. The wisdom of the crowd has usurped research and expertise, and we are each left clinging to the beliefs that best confirm our biases.

important points to be aware of
Revisado: 08-16-18
the narrator was a bit more dramatic than I would have preferred for the reading of an essay. But I got over it.
Good discussion of just how serious it is that Trump and his allies are destroying the concept of objective truth. I liked the discussion of the roots of this in postmodernism, although the author also distinguishes early postmodernism from the misuse of its frameworks by the politicians who use relativism to manipulate the population for their own ends.

The reader takes a great book and makes it better!
Revisado: 07-06-15
This is an exciting and fascinating story of the British East India Company in India. It never loses its fast pace and there are surprising plot twists. The reader is so good, including his use of different voices and accents for the different characters, that I think I would have enjoyed it less had I read it in a print version.
I heartily recommend this great adventure story.
