Historia
When the enslaved Jim overhears that he is about to be sold to a man in New Orleans, separated from his wife and daughter forever, he decides to hide on nearby Jackson Island until he can formulate a plan. Meanwhile, Huck Finn has faked his own death to escape his violent father, recently returned to town. As all readers of American literature know, thus begins the dangerous and transcendent journey by raft down the Mississippi River toward the elusive and too-often-unreliable promise of the Free States and beyond.

An example of defiance
Revisado: 02-03-25
Took me a little longer to get through than what I was expecting but, in the end, it was a good story and, very well narrated.
I’ll never understand what Hollywood decides which book makes it to the big screen and I guess there was something about this story that makes the cut but, I dunno, there’re other, more deserving stories for film interpretation in my opinion.
Jamie Foxx would be perfect for the lead roll.

Historia
To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Glad he appears humble.
Revisado: 11-30-24
Loved hearing his description of his life.
He appears to be genuinely humble by the gravitas bestowed on him and, that is an appealing virtue.
Just a suggestion Al before you leave stage left for good; A final Michael Corleone reprise. Depicts a modern day organized crime (white collar) and Michael expires as his father did.

Historia
In this intimate and open account—nothing like any rock-and-roll memoir you’ve ever read—Alex Van Halen shares his personal story of family, friendship, music and brotherly love in a remarkable tribute to his beloved brother and band mate. In his rough yet sweet voice, Alex recounts the brothers’ childhood, first in the Netherlands and then in working class Pasadena, California, with an itinerant musician father and a very proper Indonesian-born mother.

A Love Letter To A Brother
Revisado: 10-25-24
This is a wonderfully written and narrated book.
As a fan of VH from the beginning, it quenched the thirst of knowledge of the inner thoughts of, “the quiet one”.
Why not 5 stars for an overall grade?
Well, I’m sure I’m not alone in wanting more.
Would have loved learning Al’s perspective on the rest of the band’s history.
Still, a wonderfully shared memory of Alex’s brother!

Again, the pace was good.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

I listened to the entire book.
I dunno, it could have been a very quick accounting but, rather chose to not be.
I sit here wondering what the book was about. Without spoiling, yes, I get it, someone was “disappeared” who was invoked with the IRA in the 70’s.
15 hrs ????
Very well narrated though.

Revisado: 07-29-24
Extremely well laid-out as well as extremely articulate. And the latter is a breath of fresh air in this climate of communication break-down.
The man walks us through his trials of life and much of it, as a man of similar age, is reminiscent of all of our insecurities and trespasses and the self condemnation we endure and the healing to pursue.

Right place at the right time
Revisado: 03-06-23
Not for a second do I believe that the authors actions or, inaction were the triggers to his life’s circumstances.
Shit happens. Sometimes its good, other times it’s not.
He wants you to believe that his good fortune was due to his “letting go” of a situation and letting it all wash over him.
The religious credit a god when this happens, he credits “letting go”.
It was going to happen anyway. He was in the right place at the right time. Certainly the opposite can be true.
However, there is a mind trick to all this “letting go” stuff with real world measure; we’ve all been there. Ever “give up” the dating scene because you feel that’s it futile and then, “out of the blue” you meet someone and it clicks. Sure, you could say that it was a “gift of life” or, you just happen to be in the right place at the right time.
Or, ever lose something and try as you might, you just can’t find it.
The old saying applies here that, when you can’t find something, stop looking for it.
And then you find it.
You’ve rested your mind, gathered your thoughts and calmly looked and found.
Nothing mystical about it but, it’s a good life approach in all things.
Not sure that it warrants a book (or two).

Historia
When Ball Four was published in 1970, it created a firestorm. Bouton was called a Judas, a Benedict Arnold and a “social leper” for having violated the “sanctity of the clubhouse.” Baseball commissioner Bowie Kuhn tried to force Bouton to sign a statement saying the book wasn’t true. Ballplayers, most of whom hadn’t read it, denounced the book. It was even banned by a few libraries. Almost everyone else, however, loved Ball Four.

Revisado: 01-20-23
I’ve heard of this book for a long time and finally got around to listening.
I’m sorry, the story line just, lacked.
Even the updates left me wishing it was over. The short description of old timers day was the only section of value.
Wayyyyyyy to long!
The narration, ooooooph!
I appreciate that he wanted to do it himself as a memoir should but, one has to at least pretend to be a narrator and not give in to laughing and/or crying over dialogue.
Baseball fans would be wise to let this go as if it were a 3-0 count!
