Historia
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children. Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing.

Amazing memoir, could have been a touch shorter
Revisado: 02-17-24
Well written and well told. It has received some criticism for embracing victimhood or for not being a realistic account as compared to her dad or brother's memory. Those who hold that against the story do not understand the genre of memoir or the concept of an innocent narrator. Memoir is about creating an experience which this book most definitely does. The narrator is always as innocent as her current age, so 7-year-old Sue recounts events from that perspective which is very different from the perspective of 17-year-old Sue. All told this story is amazing and entertaining. My only issue is that it got bit long especially towards the end.

"Who am I becoming?" That was the question nagging pastor and author John Mark Comer. Outwardly, he appeared successful. But inwardly, things weren’t pretty. So, he turned to a trusted mentor for guidance and heard these words: "Ruthlessly eliminate hurry from your life. Hurry is the great enemy of the spiritual life." It wasn’t the response he expected, but it was - and continues to be - the answer he needs. Within this audiobook, you’ll find a fascinating road map to staying emotionally healthy and spiritually alive in the chaos of the modern world.

Historia
Most of us have instinctive evidence the world is ending - balmy December days, face-to-face conversation replaced with heads-to-screens zomboidism, a world at constant war, a political system in disarray. We hear some myths and lies so frequently that they feel like truths: Civilization is humankind’s greatest accomplishment. Progress is undeniable. Count your blessings. You’re lucky to be alive here and now. Civilized to Death counters the idea that progress is inherently good, arguing that the "progress" defining our age is analogous to an advancing disease.

Worth a Listen
Revisado: 06-08-22
While this book is written to be a persuasive argument, the argument is substantiated, supported, and balanced. In regards to the reviews that claim this book pushes a socialist agenda, that seems to be rooted in an anti-socialist fear. The argument stated in the book simply states (and then supports this among many other things) that primitive societies tended to share and pool resources equally. Some current examples of this trend are also stated, but no, this book does not propose socialism in a political sense. Even so, if the word "socialism" is a trigger word for you, you'll probably miss the message and hate the book. For those that aren't going to get turned off, this book shares some enlightening information about human nature in its truest sense, challenges some of the conventional mythology of our day, and offers insight into what being human really means.

Historia
In the newly revised and expanded second edition of Free-Range Kids, New York columnist-turned-movement leader Lenore Skenazy delivers a compelling and entertaining look at how we got so worried about everything our kids do, see, eat, read, wear, watch, and lick - and how to bid a whole lot of that anxiety goodbye. With real-world examples, advice, and a gimlet-eyed look at the way our culture forces fear down our throats, Skenazy describes how parents and educators can step back so kids step up.

Written with a fanstaic voice and performed well. It probably could be condensed; the point it is trying to make is clear early on and reiterated. However, I personally thought the book stayed interesting despite that and I enjoyed the tone.

Historia
In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

Historia
Somewhere in Africa, more than a million years ago, a line of apes began to rear their young differently than their Great Ape ancestors. From this new form of care came new ways of engaging and understanding each other. How such singular human capacities evolved, and how they have kept us alive for thousands of generations, is the mystery revealed in this bold and wide-ranging new vision of human emotional evolution. Mothers and Others finds the key in the primatologically unique length of human childhood.

Historia
Charles Eisenstein explores the history and potential future of civilization, tracing the converging crises of our age to the illusion of the separate self. He argues that our disconnection from one another and the natural world has mislaid the foundations of science, religion, money, technology, economics, medicine, and education as we know them. It has fired our near-pathological pursuit of technological Utopias even as we push ourselves and our planet to the brink of collapse.

Challenging in the Best of Ways
Revisado: 07-11-21
At first I wasn't sure if I would like that it isn't read by the author since I have heard Charles speak before, but the narrator does a good job at moving the author's words along efficiently. One needs to approach this book with an open mind and heart. Some of the ideas are challenging or even confusing but I think anyone can get out of it what they put in and what they are ready to receive.

After a lifetime of interest in the bushmen, Thomas has come to see that their lifestyle reveals great, hidden truths about human evolution.

Beautifully Written and Performed
Revisado: 05-21-20
A unique coming-of-age/loss-of-innocence novel. A book of juxtaposition. It’s blunt and understated; expressive and repressed; emotional and reserved. It will trick you into thinking it’s moving slow, but you come to and realize you’ve eaten a whole cake one crumb at a time. It’s about young adults but it is far too literary and far too figurative to be considered a “Young Adult” novel. As beautifully performed as it is written. And a twist at the end is always fun.
