Historia
Set in 1937 in rural Tennessee, with the construction of a monumental dam serving as background, Watershed delivers a gripping story of characters whose ambitions and yearnings threaten to overflow the banks of their time and place. Nathan, an engineer hiding from his past, and Claire, a housewife, struggle to find their footing in the newly electrified, job-hungry, post-Depression South. As Nathan wrestles with a secret guilt and tangled love, Claire struggles to balance motherhood and a newfound freedom that awakens ambitions and a sexuality she hadn't known she possessed.

Sense of place!
Revisado: 11-15-21
This book took me back in time to the building of the Tennessee River Hydroelectric dams. I grew up near the setting and really felt a sense of place. The author had the dialog, weather, and the historical significance of the changes brought with electricity.

A lot of unhappy people
Revisado: 07-03-19
I had high hopes for "Case Histories" but had to stop half way through. Everyone was grumpy or whiney or pained. I kept wondering if another narrator would give a different tone to the reading, but I think it was the writing.

Fabulous narration
Revisado: 06-19-19
Jane Harris is the perfect narrator for this Scottish story. It was a joy to listen to her various sayings and voices. Her humor was delightful. The story is unlike any I have read: from the perspective of a servant rather than the aristocracy. I really enjoyed the book on Audible.

Would you consider the audio edition of What Alice Forgot to be better than the print version?
I was advised to read this book years ago, but have just now gotten around to it. The story is wonderful and the performance is very good.

Historia
Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

What about Barbara Kingsolver’s performance did you like?
I liked the reading by the author.
Any additional comments?
I enjoyed the contemporary subject matter and technology. Thank you to Barbara Kingsolver for the research she did to put together this story in a believable way. Besides the science, she talked about scientists in a respectful way. I also liked her story of the family.

Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Depressing story
Revisado: 07-21-13
What was most disappointing about Gillian Flynn’s story?
The lack of hope.
Do you think Gone Girl needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I would not bother to read a follow up book.
Any additional comments?
These characters were so uknlikable. It made me sad to read "Gone Girl". Several of my friends read it and liked it. They told me to keep reading: it gets better. I wish I had stopped it about a third of the way through.I wil give the auther credit for a very complex story in which a lot of loose ends got tied off.

Historia
Part epic of Texas, part classic coming-of-age story, part unflinching examination of the bloody price of power, The Son is a gripping and utterly transporting novel that maps the legacy of violence in the American west with rare emotional acuity, even as it presents an intimate portrait of one family across two centuries. Eli McCullough is just twelve-years-old when a marauding band of Comanche storm his Texas homestead and brutally murder his mother and sister, taking him as a captive.

Revisado: 07-21-13
If you could sum up The Son in three words, what would they be?
I loved the naration by all of the characters. The story was compelling. I have suggested my friends read this book if this is the type of story they like.
What other book might you compare The Son to and why?
Family saga reminds my a bit of "New York the Novel" and "Carribean".
Which character – as performed by the narrators – was your favorite?
Eli's character was my favorite, but I liked the contrast between them all.
Any additional comments?
This was great for a long road trip.

Historia
Meet Harold Fry, recently retired. He lives in a small English village with his wife, Maureen, who seems irritated by almost everything he does, even down to how he butters his toast. Little differentiates one day from the next. Then one morning the mail arrives, and within the stack of quotidian minutiae is a letter addressed to Harold in a shaky scrawl from a woman he hasn’t seen or heard from in twenty years. Queenie Hennessy is in hospice and is writing to say goodbye.
